Are Americans losing it with Muslims?

No big thing here. Just popping by to point out that this is not the thread for another gun control debate. Hope everyone’s Christmas was a happy one. Me? I saw Doctor Who’s Christmas Special in a movie theater, thanks.

No. I don’t “plink.” I shoot at paper targets and keep score.

As noted, in western countries legal protections exist against abusive behaviors. If it’s not actually abusive then I wonder to what extent “societal disapproval” really constitutes unwarranted meddling in someone else’s culture and personal affairs – I’m sure these women are quite capable of balancing their need for acceptance within their own culture with their personal well-being. I might wish for that entire culture to change but it’s not my prerogative to forcibly change it.

Most importantly let’s remember that it’s not the victim that you want to be attacking! So again, stares and anger directed against women dressed in traditional Muslim fashion seems to me to be just plain bigotry, and the “women’s rights” argument just a thin excuse for it. Sort of like scorning black people because you’re against slavery.

No.

Noting honour killings are not in any way condoned in the Qur’an, Islam’s holy book, [Dr. Amin Muhammad, a psychiatrist at Memorial University in St. John’s, N.L.] suggested the idea is coming up more as a defence for murder by people hoping to take advantage of Canada’s cultural sensitivity in order to receive a more lenient sentence.

He also said he suspects mental-health issues are behind most cases. “We cannot rule out personality disorder among the perpetrators or some sort of psychopathology,” he said. “I think all such cases should be evaluated from a mental-health perspective.”

… While many recent cases in western society involve Muslims, Muhammad said honour killings have also been committed in the name of Hinduism, Sikhism and Christianity.

But just as most Canadians shudder in disbelief at these stories, so too do the majority of Muslims. Imam Zijad Delic of the Canadian Islamic Congress said there is “nothing Islamic” in taking a human life.

According to whom, you? Your statement is false. There are majority-Muslim and even Muslim-ruled countries in which other religions are tolerated.

If the Nazis had funny prayers and dietary restrictions and quoted from a book full of superstitions you’d give them a pass for wearing a swastika? People choose to practice a religion. Choosing to wear a shirt that is “Marriage = 1 man + 1 woman”, which contrary to your assertion may have nothing to do with an irrational fear of homosexuality, is somehow more deserving of social disapproval than choosing to belong to a religion whose most zealot adherents push gays off of tall buildings is odd.

Personally neither the t-shirt nor the traditional garb bother me. I think the only fashion choice that really gets me to shake my head are truck nuts.

Shall we hold American Christians responsible for the doings of the Klu Klux Klan simply because they self identify as Christians and hold up the book at the start of each meeting?

I am having a hard time believing you’re really that simple minded, to be honest.

Huh. Niqab equals swastika now. Who knew?

Well, sure. Aren’t all Christians exactly like ol’ Phred and gang? Oh, they’re not? How could that possibly be true?? For starters, I identify as Christian and I’m pro GLBT. Maybe that perception is more than a bit off? Nah, I say they’re all homegrown terrorists like the Phelps’ and are just looking to instill hatred and insight violence. As such, we should intimidate, deport them somewhere else and blow up their compound. Surely, all of you are with me.

I’m pretty sure I could accurately guess how the walking dictionary wearing the marriage definition T-shirt would feel about gay marriage. This person is wearing the T-shirt to make sure you know. By extension, since the Supreme Court has ruled that bans against gay marriage are fundamentally discriminatory, it would be a fair guess that the person wearing the proclamation of bigotry was a bigot.

I would be able to make no such guesses about someone wearing a garment that was traditional to their culture or religion and quietly minding their own business. Whatever they may or may not believe, they’re definitely not going around proselytizing and intruding themselves into other people’s lives. In point of fact, I’ve known both Jews and Muslims who were respectful of their traditions in such matters as observing the rules of diet and the sabbath who harbored no such bigotry toward their fellow human beings. Their religion was personal, not meddlesome or proselytic.

You learn something new every day here!

Same? No. Share similar properties such as symbolizing adherence to an intolerant ideology? Yes.

Muslims are governed by Sharia Law and as far as they are concerned Sharia Law is above US Law. They will obey US Law when it is to their advantage disobey it when it is not. Wake up and smell the coffee we have had to in Europe

I seem to remember a recent case about signing marriage licenses where somebody was putting god’s law above US law and the support that lovely person got.

perhaps we should be waking up and smelling…

The KKK are scum and have nothing to do with the teachings of Jesus

Don’t forget the Presidential candidates who advocated the same thing.

Yes honour killings are more prevalent within Islam but yes there also cases within other Asian cultures. I think that it is a mistake to evaluate it from a mental-health perspective and can only muddy the waters, it is a cultural issue that is thankfully in the decline within Sikh and Hindu communities

Except for the vast majority of muslims who are entirely respectful of other religions, and even march against extremists:

piffle

That is only true of a small number of Muslims, yet your statement indicates that it it is true of all or some overwhelming majority of Muslims. That is silly. Sharia is not the highest law in a number of countries where the majority of the population is Muslim and could impose it if they wished. And among European and North American Muslims, there is only a tiny fraction who do not regard the civil law to be the highest law for the country.

Daesh is scum and has nothing to do with the teachings of Mohammed. (They have been condemned by a large number of Islamic judicial councils. I do not say that they are not Islamic, but any claim against Daesh as “Islamic” is legitimately laid against the KKK as “Christian.”)

Cute, but we’re talking about attire.

And in that vein, in my (professional) circles, nobody gives a shit about skin color.

Competence, yes. Whether or not you know how to dress and groom appropriately, yes.

FWIW, in my circles at least, the sharpest dressers are not over represented by any one group, although perhaps my black colleagues might win an overall contest.

When you’ve got those race-colored glasses on, I guess everything has a race angle.

Geez…

Your posts are so completely full of bullshit, that I’m not going to waste my time responding to any of them.
