I voted for a break from Daleks, but if they were to be made really scary again (by showing as Larry puts it), I’d be happy.
True, and I forgot about the Angels. But I think that even in their second appearance they got less scary, so I don’t know.
Also, the Ferengi were never threatening, even if they wanted them to be. But I’ve seen it in other shows. I sorta mentioned one: Shredder was not originally comic relief in the comics.
Right, I didn’t think you meant it that way, I just wanted to point out that the comparison of old vs new Who didn’t really affect my opinion on the matter.
Shredder also
wasn’t really a recurring villain in the comics. Killed in his first appearance, and even when he “came back” it wasn’t really the typical “he got better” but some weird shit about magic worms eating his body and becoming a clone him or something. Then that one got killed too.
In the grand scheme of things, he was more of a “burglar that killed Uncle Ben” than a Green Goblin
:smack: I knew that. My original comparison was between the first cartoon and TMNT, but I thought it worked the other way as well. If I’m going to go by memory, it needs to be a comic I am actually familiar with, rather than a half-remembered article I read.
Bring back Morbius!
I guess you’re right. I hadn’t counted The Space Museum and shouldn’t have The Five Doctors either. So, for what it’s worth, with that exclusion OldWho goes from 8.6% Dalek stories to 8% and from 11% Dalek episodes to 10.3%. Peter davison goes from 10% Dalek stories to 5% (just behind Tom Baker’s 4.75%) and from 11% Dalek episodes to 5.5% (just ahead of Baker’s 5.6%) giving him the lowest Dalek episode percentage of all the Doctors.
I like the Daleks as recurring villains much more than I like the Cybermen.
Sure, but that’s just because the Cybermen are rubbish. I think the only Cybermen story I ever liked was Earthshock and to be honest, that story would have been better with Daleks or even a one-off villain.
A worthy effort. I just went by the Wikipedia template for Dalek stories. The emergence of NuWho seemed to leave viewers (me at least :)) with more Dalek stories per Doctor. It would have been nice if the Daleks had been left to a “Children of Earth” style story, giving them a proper send off or a proper story that would have kept us going for a few years without them.
The one Dalek they leave behind to keep things going is getting a bit tired now.
Maybe a silly question, but is anyone really a fan of the Cybermen? They can be kind of cool, sure, but they’re just like slow-type zombies with muffled voices.

I liked the version in that one Christmas special where they were only at partial power. I also didn’t mind their first appearance.
They were real menacing in Tomb of the Cybermen.
I haven’t seen the current incarnation of the Doctor, but… can there be such a thing as too many Daleks? They’re cute! But they’re the bad guys! They’re not guys, they’re robots and they’re cute! But…!
Their first appearance was fine. I just don’t see them as a cosmic level threat on the scale of the Daleks or The Master. But they just keep showing up over and over. I just don’t see them being hard to permanently squish - and if they actually survived long enough to go up against something like the Sontatans it would be a damned short fight.

I like 'em okay. The idea that people who are converted into Cyberman retain an awareness of what they used to be, and harbor an enervating horror at what’s been done to them that’s kept in check by their programming, is pretty chilling.
I agree that they make lousy Borg.
Moffat has today stated that the Daleks are being given a rest:
Although a cynic might think he has said this so when they appear in the final episode of this series it will be a surprise.
It’s been rumored for a while that he was doing it, but the reason given was that people just didn’t like the iDaleks.
