Last week we were on vacation with the extended family. At the start of the vacation, one of my nephews was afflicted with prodigious flatulence. His farts were impressive: powerfully odoriferous, with a distinct “nose”.
After a few days, Nephew’s farts began to subside, but he was replaced by my brother’s foster son’s tooting of his own horn. The “nose” was exactly the same, despite the fact that the meals being served varied a great deal.
So I got to thinking: flatulence is caused by bacteria in the lower GI. Are, or can, this bacteria be contagious? Did Foster Son’s farts smell the same as Nephew’s because Nephew had infected Foster Son? And, if so, what was the vector?
