And here’s a link.
Does anyone remember a strip in which Schulz was kvetching about kids these days using the word “goes”, rather than “says”, when recounting a conversation?
Somebody will get back to you on that in 2034.
It can wait. It was the casualest of questions- I don’t even like Peanuts
Charlie Brown and the others all seemed younger when the strip started as Li’l Folks. They seemed to age into 2 or 3 different age ranges, with Charlie Brown, Sherman, the original Patty, Pig-pen, Schroeder, and Violet all appearing to be the same age, with Lucy a little younger, and Linus younger than her. Frieda seemed to be the same age as Lucy I think, but I don’t recall her interacting with anyone but Schroeder much. Lucy and Linus also had a little brother named Rerun who appeared briefly. Other new characters like Franklin and Peppermint Patty seemed to be in the older group but Marcie wasn’t quite clear. The use of female characters, including playing sports with the boys was something rather groundbreaking, as was the addition of Franklin, a drawing of color, and Peppermint Patty and Marcie with who were ‘tomboys’, appearing to be thinly veiled young lesbians.
Do you mean it’s about using ‘goes’ as a synonym for ‘says’?
I was all, like “Your continuity sucks, man”, and Shulz was like “It’s my strip!”, and i’m like, “Linus and Sally can’t be in the same class!” and Shulz is like “:Fuck off ya sniviling kid, I do what I want!” And I’m like “sheesh man chill out.” Then he died.
And so it goes.
And Marcie and Patty go to a different school entirely. I always thought Frieda did as well, but I can’t say what made me think so.
Yup. There was a recent stretch (in re-runs on Go Comics) where Patty’s school falls down or something so she has to go to school at Charlie Brown’s school and has to share a desk with him.
Yeah. It’s used quite a bit irl, but it’s usually not noticed. Here’s Ben:

I don’t think that is the URL you meant to post?
Other way 'round.
Ah, yes, you’re right of course.
Aside: This is also why Charlie Brown is bald, or nearly so. Whenever he’s stressed (which is often), he visits his dad at the barber shop, and every time, his dad trims off a bit.
Charles Schultz’s father was a barber.
Marcie (the cute, not stereotyped one) may or may not have a crush on Peppermint Patty, but the tomboyish stereotyped Patty is not meant to be a lesbian. She likes “Chuck” a lot, and is not hot for Marcie.
I used to go by the barber shop often on my way to Macalester College, though I wasn’t aware of it until I saw a TV special about Schulz. My astronomy professor at Mac was a close friend of his and the namesake of Shermy.
I’m not saying either Patty or Marcie were intended to be lesbians, but that was a common perception. I certainly don’t think that kids would pick that up when the characters were introduced, such things were not discussed publicly back then. Schulz was probably just finding a way to include a girl
in sports with the same level of interest that Charlie Brown had. Im not sure what he intended for Marcie.
I kinda love that my return to the forum is via a Peanuts thread, even if it is for some heathen who doesn’t like the strip.
Yes, there is indeed a strip re: “goes” vs. “said.” December 26, 1977, where Lucy recounts a tale using that “goes” thing:
Welcome back! You must be in a lot of resurrected threads, because it really didn’t seem like you were gone for four years. I must see your name all over the place.
