…and if either sex tips the scale in having more bisexual, or having more homosexual people, why do you think that is?
I thought I once read on these boards that there were more bisexual women, and more gay men. I don’t think that to be true, I just know I’ve read that before. Probably misinformation.
I guess I’ll put this question in here. I bolded the part that could be an “opinion”, unless there’s an definitive answer?
My impression (which I have no data for) is that it’s more socially acceptable for a woman to be bi than for a man to be bi, so biologically bi women can present that way, while biologically bi men are pushed to be either entirely hetero or entirely homo by society. So even if there is an even mix between the genders, I would expect more bi women than men, and more gay men than lesbians.
Based on my comprehensive, years-long study of the documentary evidence, I conclude that all women are bisexual or lesbian, and there’s no gay dudes at all.
I have to disagree with my learned colleague, here. My own research has been entirely unable to turn up any evidence of this supposed “woman” creature at all.
From what I’ve seen, there seem to be a high number of theoretically bi women. We’ve had quite a few on this very board stating that they ‘are bi, but have never done anything with a women’. It seems to be a lot more rare for a man to say the same about men.
The short and unsatisfying answer is that no one really knows. There have been surveys where more women than men self-identified as bisexual and more men than women self-identified as homosexual, but there’s no real way of knowing whether respondents are being totally honest with the surveyors or even with themselves.
If you’re looking for the results of such a survey, there’s an interesting report from the CDC titled “Sexual Behavior, Sexual Attraction, and Sexual Identity in the United States: Data From the 2006–2008 National Survey of Family Growth”. Among those who did not identify as heterosexual, women were more likely to identify as bisexual and men were more likely to identify as homosexual. About 1% of women identified as homosexual and 3% as bisexual, while for men it was about 2% homosexual and 1.5% bisexual. (See pages 29 and 30.) But even setting aside any question of the accuracy of these figures, it’s not clear to me how they should be interpreted. One could say this survey indicates that there are twice as many gay men as there are lesbians, and twice as many bisexual women as bisexual men, or one could say that the difference in absolute numbers is pretty small.
Thank you so much for answering my question! It’s been something I’ve wondered about for a while now.
I don’t think I did a good job with my OP and the title to this thread. So, I apologize for that.
It’s funny, but I once was a little “threatened” or “insecure” with the amount of women I met that liked other women. I guess as a guy, I felt like I was a part of the Ugly, Smelly, and Hairy gender. People would tell me that women are “more naturally beautiful”. I don’t know if I buy that. Or at least it’s subjective.
Though I’m 100% straight, if I were to have a choice between drawing a female nude or a male nude, I would pick a male. Though I think a male would be more challenging and “fun” to draw, the overall beauty of the finished works of male or female nude would probably be equal in my eyes.
I really don’t know where my insecurities came from, but as I got older, I started meeting more closeted bisexual men, which sort of made me wonder if it was just more “socially acceptable” for women to be open about their interest in other women.
Let me be clear that I didn’t WANT to feel threatened, I just did.
Most girls are like 3 drinks away from being bisexual.
The same is simply not true about most guys. I think it’s a nurture type thing that has gone on for decades. Remember how ‘Brokeback Mountain’ was a big deal? And how ‘Wild Things’ came out way earlier and was not mired in controvery.
