I know metallica does a version of carol of the bells and Ozzy osbourne does a version of winter wonderland. Are there any alternative Rock (slipknot, Korn, anything along those lines) christmas songs or versions of christmas songs?
In about 1993, there was a compilation CD released called “Lump of Coal”. It had artists on it like Hoodoo Gurus, Drunken Boat, et. al. But, the reading of “'Twas the Night Before Christmas” by Henry Rollins is definitly worth the price of admission, if you can find a copy of the CD.
Not that I know of. And since when are Korn or Slipknot considered alternative rock?
If you’re interested in something very different, I recommend the Excelsis series from Projekt records. Think goth/industrial takes on traditional carols.
There’s all sorts if you go looking. Try looking for a CD called ‘The Edge of Christmas’. Beck’s ‘Little Drum Machine Boy’ is NOT to be missed.
I don’t know what the Genre is called, I always considered alternative rock to be all the rock of the mid 90s-today.
Would I be able to buy The Edge of Christmas at walmart (before anyone laughs walmart is the main retail outlet of CDs and has 20% of the market) or would that be a specialty item i’d have to go to a place like Tower Records to get?
Oh, and ‘You Sleigh Me’ is another good comp of alt Christmas songs.
Both of them are several years old and I’m pretty certain Wal-Mart only stocks current releases.
I’d hit Tower or Amazon if I were you. Those are your most likely targets.
You’re probably going to have to look online for this stuff. If you’re lucky, Amazon will have it. If not–well, hey, there’s always eBay. Alternatively, you could use AMG to find the labels and try to buy from them directly.
First thing that comes to mind is “Black Snow” by Ten Benson but I don’t know if would be available in/to the US.
Mistletunes has reviews of a lot of rock Christmas albums. I collect non-traditional xmas CDs and have used this site a lot.
It’s at least a year old now, but I still like Blink 182’s I Won’t Be Home for Christmas.
I recommend the iTunes online store: you can find a bunch of stuff (though not necessarily modern) by searching for “christmas” in either the title or album name field. The software download is free, and most songs are $0.99.
A favorite:
Mojo Nixon’s We Three Kings.
We were drunk for three days straight
Feeling like we were Tom waits
I’m not sure it’s considered alt-rock, but The Kinks have an excellent song called Father Christmas. The lyrics are here
Lapdog did a version that I like better than the original and released it on their website on christmas a few years ago, unfortunately I don’t think it’s up anymore.
There’s an album called “A Santa Cause: It’s A Punk Rock Christmas”. It’s “new punk”, so that’s basically alternative nowadays. Blink 182, Something Corporate, New Found Glory, MXPX, etc. I haven’t gotten a copy yet, so it may suck. It has the song Misnomer mentioned, so that’s a partial endorsement.
Also, the Barenaked Ladies have a new Christmas album out, which has their excellent version of “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen”.
More alternative than Korn or Slipknot…
Thanks For Christmas by XTC is the best X-mas song I’ve ever encountered - and it’s not even serious.
Oh yeah, I also like Everclear’s cover of Santa Baby. Art Alexakis has the right voice for that song.
They Might Be Giants, one of the most popular alt-bands of the '80s, released a couple of Christmas albums. Maybe one, for all I know, but I think there is atleast two. Holidayland, is it?
If you are from New England, you gotta love Merry Merry Merry Frickin’ Xmas by Frickin’ A.
Everclear also did a song called “I Won’t Be Hating You for Christmas,” which I think is a bonus track on So Much for the Afterglow. You should also hunt down “Fairytale of New York” by the Pogues.
