Are there any good fitted sheets out there?

A few months ago, I bought some new sheets at Bed Bath and Beyond (I had a little time left over after going to Home Depot). It wasn’t long afterwards that I noticed a tear in the fitted sheet. I figured it was my fault, and rather than make another trip to the store, I thought I’d just order a replacement online. But as I was looking up the sheets on their web site, I just happened to read the reviews, and it appears that this is a very common problem with these sheets.

So, I jumped around to some other stores, and found that this seems to be a common problem almost everywhere. So what’s the scoop? I don’t ever remember this being a problem in the past. Has the world lost the recipe for making fitted sheets that don’t tear?

I thought that before I buy my replacements, I’d check in with the folks in the know here and see if there is a good source of sheets that are going to last at least a few years. Oh, and they have to be soft, too. I can’t stand itchy sheets. If they weren’t too hot in the summer, I’d have flannel sheets year 'round.

Lands End sheets are quite well made IMO. And soft. Costco also sells high end sheets at a very reasonable price. I’ve never had my sheets tear.

I’ve never had a fitted sheet tear. We generally buy during the White Sale at Macy’s. Ralph Lauren sheets are pretty good, Charter Club are nice as well.

Do you have a deep mattress and buy sheets for the regular depth mattress?

I bought 5 or 6 sets of sheets when I got my place in 1978. This post reminds me that I still have all but one in use. They have held up amazingly well. Brand? West-Point Pepperrell. Worked in a place where we had access to their company store so these were “seconds”. Amazing, huh? Oh, same goes for the sets of towels.

That was my first thought. I have a deep mattress and a memory foam topper, and if I don’t get extra deep sheets, they tear from the strain.

No. Regular, regular.

Another vote for Lands end. Since I’ve discovered their sheets every other pair I have has been sitting in the closet unused. Someday they’ll become rags or donated depending on their condition but I am never going back.

Where did the sheet tear? Could sharp toenails be to blame?

Buy the highest thread count you can, it’s like sleeping in lotion.

I’m using these from J.C. Penney. They’re plenty soft, but the best part is the stretchy fabric at the top and bottom. I don’t have to struggle to get them on the bed, and they stay put.

The different fabric at the top and bottom also means that you don’t have to guess which is the top/bottom and which is the side. With other sheets, I always guess wrong and have to re-fit the sheet.

Where do you find regular-depth sheets these days?

I can’t find anything but those stupid idiotic pillowtop and ultra sheets.

Because y’know, bigger is always better.

Really? You need 18 friggin inches of mattress? Really?

No, no they don’t. They sag and wrinkle and create huge lumps when there’s twice as much material as you need.

We got our sheets at BB&Beyond and they’re tearing at the corners too but in our case, it’s because of the plugs to our heated bed pad. Other than that, I’ve never had a sheet tear.

My issue is with sheets that aren’t deep enough or are too deep. We have a pillow top (which I HATE) but it’s not a huge one. I just can’t seem to find sheets that fit properly so our sheets always too big (because too small just doesn’t work at all).
