Other ones I thought of are Being There and almost anything by the Coen Brothers but particularly The Big Lebowski, Fargo, Miller’s Crossing, Blood simple and Barton Fink.
My 10-star movies from IMDb, which I personally define as “infinitely re-watchable”:
Casablanca (1942)
The Godfather (1972)
The Conversation (1974)
Silver Streak (1976)
Emmet Otter’s Jug-Band Christmas (1977)
Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977)
Star Wars (1977)
Being There (1979)
Hopscotch (1980)
Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982)
'Round Midnight (1986)
The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
Grosse Pointe Blank (1997)
American Beauty (1999)
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002)
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)
No Country for Old Men (2007)
Judging from your list, I would like to recommend to you a movie starring Walter Matthau - Charley Varrick (1973).
It is a crime caper movie but it is one of those very rare cases where every actor, the director and everyone else working on that movie were just running at full speed and the result was a very watchable and re-watchable movie.
If you’ve never seen it, I hope you will enjoy it. It is more than 40 years old. But it still holds up today as a most excellent movie.
I hope you will excuse me for saying this. But “Charley Varrick” is a much better movie than is Hopscotch.
Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) Local Hero (1983) Goodfellas (1990) The Commitments (1991)
*Fargo *(1996) Boogie Nights (1997)
All of these movies are, in my mind, as close to perfect as a movie can be: they have engaging plots, interesting characters, terrific story development, great cinematography and (importantly) they stick the landing – the ending resonates as much as any other point of the movie.
For instance, I absolutely love a bunch of the Coen brothers’ movies, but *Fargo *is the only one that I can watch at any given time without fast-forwarding through some scenes that don’t quite work for me.
Dr. No
Live and Let Die
Men in Black
The Hunt for Red October
Rope
Batman (1966)
Batman (1989)
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
In The Line of Fire
The Ten Commandments
El Cid
Dracula (1931)
Wall Street
The one I’ve watched the most times is probably Primer. It’s an interesting case, because it’s not simply re-watchable, it’s actually entirely incomprehensible on the first viewing and only makes sense if you watch it multiple times. The first thing you do after watching *Primer *for the first time is to immediately watch it again, at least twice. Then you go away and make some Excel diagrams. Then you come back and watch it a few more times.
I have prepared a more complete list so that anyone who is interested could come here to look for some good films to watch. Many other people have also listed excellent films and I want to thank everyone who has contributed to this thread.
