I’ve done a little research on WWII military airships, and I’ve found a few references to a “popular” German song that went like:
Zeppelin, flieg!
Hilf uns im krieg,
Flieg nach England,
England wird abgebrannt,
Zeppelin, flieg!
Or, translated,
“Fly, Zeppelin!
Help us in war,
Fly against England,
England shall be destroyed by fire!
Fly, Zeppelin!”
Great stuff, huh? Makes you want to strap on a Pickelhaube or somethin’.
Anyway, my question is…are there any surviving recordings of this song? (Or any recent ones, for that matter?) I’m kinda curious as to what it sounded like.
I can’t help with the song, I’m afraid but this Zeppelin Reader quotes a sighlty different translation and refers to it as ‘Fly Zeppelin: A Children’s Song’ by ‘anonymous’ so I expect it’s quite a simple tune.
The book itself is excellent and has several songs and their music, poems, reports, diary entries, etc.
I got it after seeing the new film ‘Zeppelin!’ by Gordian Maugg, which incorporates a lot of period footage of the Zeppelin Works, etc. and is definitely recommended…
