Are there any songs that reference time travel?

Led Zep’s Kashmir:

I’m a traveller of both time and space, to be where I have been.

Don’t forget Morris Day, Jerome Benton, Jimmy Jam, and Terry Lewis!

Somebody bring me a mirror.

:smack:

I get Croce and Chapin mixed up; my parents were big fans of both, and I didn’t really make a distinction between the two until I was in my teens. Still, I’m embarrassed.

And how do I get that out of my head, now?

Also, anybody remember this from The Arsonists?

crickets

Don’t blush – it is a tremendously sad and emotional song. It’s also an obvious theme that has not been used to often in science fiction – I can only think of William Nolan’s “One Love Have I” and John Varley’s “The Pusher” as songs that dealt with it.

Hmmn. To the word processor . . . .

Stories, not songs.

Well, obviously, you just have to jump to the left, and then step to the right. Put your hands on your hips, and bring your knees in tight. And then, the pelvic thrust will really drive you insaaaaaaaaane.

Oh, wait…that’s just doing the Time Warp again…

You are pure fucking evil, jayjay.

Interesting.

In Joe Haldeman’s The Forever War, it becomes as big a concern for the soldiers as the war itself. Because each battle takes place light-years away, once two soldiers ship out on different missions, that’s the last they ever see of each other.

But as to the OP, 39 is far and away my favorite. Until that last line, the song could just as easily be about explorers on Earth sailing the oceans.
For so many years have gone, though I’m older but a year
Your mother’s eyes, from your eyes, cry to me

“Angel” by Concrete Blonde

What if I said I saw the future
And the future was as picture in your head
What if I said to you to paint another picture
And you’d wake up in the future that you’d painted
And you did.

Okay, its pretty metaphorical time travel, but it’s the best I got.

“It’s All Been Done” by the Barenaked Ladies is about two people who keep meeting up throughout history.

The first song that came to mind is Neutral Milk Hotel’s “Oh Comely”. In it, Jeff Mangum sings about going back in time 50 years to save someone, presumably Anne Frank.

There was some Heinlein novel that also used time dilation as a major plot point (don’t recall the title), and To the Stars by our old friend L. Ron Hubbard had time dilation as the theme of the whole book.

Busted - year 3000

“He said I’ve been to the year 3000
Not much has changed but they lived underwater
and your great great great granddaughter
is pretty fine (is pretty fine)”

As for '39 it is a great song. But there is one thing I don’t get. The singer is obviously surprised and depressed to find that the earth has aged so fast. But how can he not know that? Are the people smart enough to make amazingly fast spaceships, but not smart enough to understand the theory of relativity?

Laurie Anderson - The Dream Before:
