I don’t like a lot of things that are added to old recipes these days.
“Oh, you’ve got to try this! I put cilantro in it!” All aftertaste.
“Don’t be stingy, waiter, pour more and more pesto sauce on Fanny’s dish” Thanks but no thanks!

Yes, I hate small dishes of olive oil to dip your bread in, instead of butter.
The worst thing about F.F. (I needn’t blaspheme twice in the same thread) is the was they are served with everything. Order a fruit salad breakfast special, and you’ll find it hidden under a pile of crisp-fried potato slices.
That is the worst thing about them. That and their irresitability. They will leap onto your face, pry your lips apart, and claw their way down your throat. Those are the two worst things about F.F.
And the way they are so heavy. Sodden with death itself, in the form of trans-fatty acids. The three worst things about F.F. are the way they are so heavy, their ubiquity, and the fact you can’t resist them.
Four! Four terrible things about F.F. Their heaviness, ubiquity, irresistability, and the way your mouth tastes like the wake of the apocalypse after you’ve eaten them. That’s right, just four bad things about F.F.
No no there are five!
Oh bugger.
Got to agree with the original OP about cilantro…I’m not keen on it either, it’s overused in my estimation.
But the thing I hate most is practially a food group all to itself…the all American hamburger. Never before in the history of the world has such and evil an insidious instrument of destruction been invented. I believe that the breakdown of “family values” in this country can be traced right from the early days of Kelly’s and McDonald’s to present day “extra-value meals”. Now these places are like a blight on the landscape, their bright yellow, red, and blue signs signaling the hungry, cholesterol laden masses to drive thru and clog their colons with this filthy, ground up, slauterhouse by-product. YUCK!!! I firmly believe that a steady and regular diet of hamburgers, with or without cheese, will eventually result in a person with lowered IQ and a life of general moral decay.

I hate “skin on” mashed potatoes and fries. I think that the restaurant business started this trend to save labor costs. Some people claim to like the taters better this way, but I hate it.
LOTS of black pepper on EVERYTHING! Sheesh. There’s a pepper shaker on the table, and I don’t think that the restaurants I go to use a pepper grinder in the kitchen. I saw a cookie recipe with black pepper in it. I don’t think I’ll be trying THAT one any time soon.
Beef fajita meat marinated with jalapenos. Why, yes, I DO have a touchy stomach, if I eat this (or black pepper, or raw onions, or…) I’ll be in agony for hours.
“Blackened” items. Some things were just not meant to be blackened.
I rather like cilantro, and will ask if I can get a little pile of it with my fajitas. However, I don’t insist that everyone eat it!
I like trying new things. But some old recipes simply should NOT be tampered with.
I get tired of every new burger being bacon, double bacon, bacon bits, (which I love) and then I find they’ve added “liquid smoke” in the “pre-stamped grill marks” to give it that ashtray aftertase.
The hot food trend. Blackened, flamed, jerked,
whatever. Even in vegetarian stuff. I HATE HOT
FOOD!
Fanny May:
– I hated cilantro-spiked dishes for over a decade, for precisely the reason you mentioned: “all aftertaste”. It’s not that I actually disliked the flavor, but I didn’t see the point, and wouldn’t order faijitas, etc. for exactly that reason (and I did a lot of consulting in texas in the 80’s, so keeping my resolution was a challenge)
Then I spent a month in Mexico, and acquired a serious taste for it. It turns out that cilantro is just a poor substitute for a Mexican herb called epazote (with a stronger flavor). It’s an acquired taste, but definitely addictive. I still think cilantro is pointless, but I don’t mind it now
The funny part is that epazote will grow in most of the US, but supplies outside of Mexico/Central America are scarce (and always the dried stock). Why? Because there’s no demand. Meanwhile the ‘fake stuff’, cilantro has gone through the roof, and is widely cultivated.
I love to cook (fortunately most of my friends hate to cook, so I have willing victims) and I keep a stash of dried epazote (from the internet) in the winter, and grow my own when I can.
I’ll eat anything once – twice to make sure it wasn’t a fluke – but there are a lot foods that didn’t impress me until I tried the real thing ‘at the source’. Afterwards, even the ersatz stuff tastes better
I don’t really like whipped-cream frosting on those office party square celebration cakes. Some people gush like it’s special, but I much prefer sturdier stuff, like chocolate fudge.
This one isn’t an actual food, but a trend–going to a nice restaurant that serves “tall food” Those dishes where all the items are piled about 5" tall in the center of the plate, and you’re not always sure what exactly that green thing is and where that piece of seared ahi tuna you ordered is hidden. Worst of all, you’re not exactly sure where to stick your fork in for the first bite, and after that, the whole tower collapses into a heap on the plate.
I can understand this whole “chef-as-artist” thing, but food’s meant to be eaten. Make it look pretty–but make it look like it wants to be eaten.
I’m damn tired of sushi, too. I’ve never seen what’s so special about it–I don’t hate it, I just don’t think it’s fantastic.
The ‘fake’ frosting on grocery store cakes. You know the stuff. It comes in pretty colors and fancy designs and never seems to harden up enough and never tastes as good as it looks.
There used to be a real bakery here in my town that made frosting to kill for out of real butter and other wonderful and no doubt terribly fattening things that hardened up just right and had a flavor that was magnificent. They placed it on cakes that melted in ones mouth and tasted so good one wanted to just keep eating! Those cakes did not taste like flavored cardboard, nor did they give one heartburn afterwards – though you could gain 20 pounds by just walking by them.
Alas, the bakery priced itself out of business for when the grocery stores were selling big cakes at $10 they were selling them at $20.
So, now we all eat cardboard cake slathered with sawdust frosting and the old bakery is now a thrift store.
I have always loved McDonald’s Chicken McNuggets.
Especially when dipped in some sweet & sour sauce - damn, are they good. I’d get them whenever I was feeling particularly affluent (which was once in a blue moon), being that they are so freakin expensive.
But for the past 6 months or so, McDonald’s has had this promotion where every Tuesday, the 6 piece McNuggets would cost only $0.89.
Needless to say, I’ve been frequenting McDonald’s quite often come Tuesday. But just in the past couple of weeks, the taste I’ve grown to love is starting to fade away. They just don’t do it for me anymore.
So, now I don’t know what to do. I guess I’ll just have to wait around until Subway has some kind of deal on their Chicken Footlongs.
The food that I am sick of is sour dough bread. I don’t care what you put on it, how you slice it, or how you cook it, it needs to go.
I’m tired of McDonalds, if that counts.
I’m tired of the arms race to see who can market candy bars with the highest percentage of cocoa powder. I don’t eat much candy in any case, so it spites me when my wife buys these things and I unwittingly eat a piece of one.
Zombie threads; No matter how much fresh cilantro you add.
Doesn’t meet my standards is a one-man resurrection machine.
Give it a rest, dude!
There are a hell of a lot more “popular foods” that I’ve never even tried the first time. I’ve never been to a Subway, for example.
Ya know, if you made a batch of Scotch when this thread started, it’d be ready now. Mebbe try some cilantro in the current batch & come back in another 14 years???
Some people taste cilantro as bitter. Not me, but then I like broccoli.
I don’t care for cheeseburgers. Hamburgers fine, same with grilled cheese, just not together. But I love most of the foods mentioned. Especially sushi and hot foods.
