Are wall street occupiers "defecating on police cars and the American flag"...?

… as claimed by a letter to the editor in the Montreal Gazette this morning?

This is not an attempt to start a discussion of them, only to answer a simple question of fact.

If one or two did once, who knows? As a matter of general behaviour, over a month or two, I have seen no such indicator. The only thing related to this was a bit by Samantha Bee on the Daily Show about local restaurants and fast-food places complaining about perotesters using their washrooms for free and leaving a mess. Where else ya gonna go, and the police for some reason are not making life easy for the protesters.

Well, there is a picture of a person defecating while standing next to a police car. It’s one person, but I guess it’s an inflammatory pic depending on the spin. It certainly has the blogosphere running at level-10 outrage. (Anyone who lives in NYC and hasn’t seen someone poop on the street, raise your hand.)

There’s also a picture making the rounds of a protester defecating on a flag, but it’s four or five years old.

Both links are NSFW, in as much as they show bare-buttocked humans.

Edited OP to indicate subject in thread title.

I read that as: but it’s a four or five year old.

Hey, they’ve made the flag into all sorts of other articles of clothing, why not diapers?

Larry Flynt already did that bit.

Apparently, the answer is “no”. Realistically, even if the answer was “Some of them”, then in general, the answer would still be “no”. They don’t even have a unified list of grievences, there is no way the entire group would have a plan of action of crapping on cop cars and flags. Aside from that… what would be the point? How is that a statement against Wall Street?? (Crapping on the Wall Street Journal, maybe. Crapping on the Bull Statue, maybe.) No, as a group, they wouldn’t do those things.

Why is shitting on the American flag any worse than burning it? Ideologically, I mean. Obviously shit is worse from an odiferous standpoint. But they should both be legal, aside from the public defecation bit.

The “defecating on a police car” photo is either edited, or unrelated to the OWS protests.

The “81PCT” markings on the car indicate that it’s an 81st precinct car.

The 81st precinct is located in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, which is 6 miles and 15 minutes’ drive away from Wall Street in good traffic, and which has NOT been policing the protests.

The site of the OWS protests is in New York’s 1st precinct, which, as can be seen in this photo, are marked “1PCT”.

Thanks for all the replies. Especially that the defecation on a police car had nothing to do with the protest. The Gazette actually published part of my letter this morning but edited it to eliminate any reference to the previous letter and made it seem as if I was replying to an editorial cartoon. Bastards!

Nobody here is saying it should be illegal, they just wanted to know if it was being done.

Perhaps they’ve had to call in for help from outlying areas??? Not sure its been disproved yet.

The guy does look homeless though rather than being dressed up in protest garb.

Gotta say that I don’t recall seeing those kinds of pictures (trash, creative uses for flags) at Tea Party rallys.

The photographer has written a post explaining the circumstances of the picture. He says it was taken just north of Zuccotti Park outside of a McDonalds. I can report from personal experience that there is a McDonalds a half block north of Zuccotti Park on Broadway, between Liberty and Cortlandt.

The photographer acknowledges the guy may have been homeless rather than a protester – although he concludes the guy was a protester.

It’s always about the context, isn’t it? If it’s a picture of a protester, then it’s relative to a current event… and thus more valuable. Otherwise it’s just a depressing photo of some crazy bum taking a crap.

Smapti says that particular precinct was not called in to assist.

I think the picture refutes that claim. It doesn’t take a whole lot of googling to find photos of squad cars from other precincts around the OWS site. 43rd, 23rd, 13th, etc.
