Tars, your shoes are clashing horribly with the planetary makeup.
I love this message board !!!
Someone must have told the doomsdayers about the November, 2002 edition of Scientific American.
It had an article on what would happen if another star crashed into our sun, and an article which suggested our poles may be about to shift.
Additionally, the same issue had a photo of two gladiators scrogging. If one of them had been Russel Crowe I’d quit buying the magazine for good.
Huuraaay!
Only 10 more Christmas shopping years!
Well, then I guess I can shorten the mortgage a tad!
Heck no. Why pay the house off now when it’ll be gone in 10 years? Refinance for another 30 years and enjoy spending all that money you won’t have to pay back.
That the earth was considered flat by Biblical writers is implicit in such passages as Daniel 4:10-11, Matthew 4:8 and Revelation 1:7. It because of passages such as these that the issue of whether the earth is spherical or not is still debated by individuals who regard themselves as Biblical literalists.
slipster I’m not picking on you, but implicit? I just don’t see how a Bible reader can mistake these things as saying dogmatically that the Earth is flat if the context of those scriptures is taken into account.
*Daniel 4:10-11
Now the visions of my head upon my bed I happened to be beholding, and, look! a tree in the midst of the earth, the height of which was immense. The tree grew up and became strong, and its very height finally reached the heavens, and it was visible to the extremity of the whole earth.*
This was a dream that Nebuchadnezzer, king of Babylon, was describing to Daniel.
*Matthew 4:8
Again the Devil took him along to an unusually high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory…*
Closest thing of these 3 to a flat earth statement, but by inference only. It could also be interpreted as a vision.
*Revelation 1:7
Look! He is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, and those who pierced him; and all the tribes of the earth will beat themselves in grief because of him. Yes, Amen.*
This is most definitely a vision as Rev 1:1 says it was presented in signs.
So, I ask, how are these passages implicit proof of flat earth belief by Bible writers?
But, then again, The Bible is open to a lot of interpretations…
And i think literalists are funny, if not a little disturbing.
