well, i have to start somewhere. it’s not easy being auntnut’s daughter. i thought i’d have that out right from the start.
the other day, i tried to get in a chatroom and the people wouldn’t talk to me.

Welcome to the SDMB. This isn’t a chatroom where you automatically get noticed. You have to post something - and something interesting at that.

I don’t think she meant the SDMB, qts, as it’s a message board. Yes, mickynicky15, I have noticed that. Makes you feel like you’ve got spinach stuck in your teeth or something, huh?
Oh, by the way, as qts pointed out, usually on message boards–especially the SDMB–most posters try to aim for complete sentences (or at least understandable fragments), proper capitalization, punctuation and spelling. We don’t always succeed, but we try …
If you’re used to chatrooms and IM’s, where the standard is non-capitalization, non-punctuation, and abbreviated spelling, it’s a whole different world, I know.

I don’t think that she is asking about being ignorned on the SDMB since the OP is her first post.
I can’t help with the question since I almost never use chat rooms, but I’m sure that someone will be along shortly to commiserate.

I would tend to say that the people I ignore in chat rooms are the ones who blurt out stuff that simply cries out “Notice me! Talk to me!” but has very little to do with what’s being discussed. Your mileage may vary, of course; I don’t know what chat rooms you visit, or what you say that gets ignored. Some chatroom veterans are very cynical about drive-by short-term visitors, too.

Most of the chat rooms I’ve frequented were full of regulars who drop in at least every other day.
Needless to say I had a BIG problem getting any respect whatsoever. I’m a good conversationalist and won over the friendlier ones pretty fast, and from there I simply tried to log on enough to become a “regular.” My attention span is short as hell, though, and after a few weeks I just quit showing up until a year or so later, at which time, of course, I’m once again a complete unknown.
Oh, well, such is life.
Well, you could find another chat board. There are hundreds, some with video cameras, but the guys in them were doing gross things, so I no use those anymore. I used to just hang out in the lesbian chat rooms because they have more meaningful chat & I wasn’t ignored.

Well, I know in chatrooms I will welcome a newcomer, but find it hard to chat if they won’t reply much. Also, the kind of newbie who bounces in immediately demanding “ASL?” tends to get people’s back up.
N.B. I am not suggesting you are gulty of either of these.

As your mother, I must appologise for not welcoming you sooner than this…I have been lax with the boards of late, and, seeing as you signed up while at your dad’s place in Idaho (not too suprising, as you never can seem to get online at your mom’s house, for some ODD reason!) I missed your “starter thread”.
Oh, by the way gang…this would be the child who came home from school and told me about the “Motivational speaker”
who was living “In a van…down by the river”, in the MPSIMS thread that I started in June, and was completely IGNORED by 243 viewers…until IdleThoughts, the “Patron Saint of Ignored Threads” revived and restored my faith in my fellow dopers…
