Then you may be just who we’re looking for. The Official Drew Peterson Defense Fund needs your help.
And, best of all, it’s for the kids. Don’t forget about the kids.

Ha!
I saw it before it was removed or moved. That was… pretty ridiculous. What about the children?! To quote the ADA of Law and Order: SVU - “He wouldn’t be a single father if he hadn’t killed his wife.”
Does anyone else keep mentally replacing “Stacy Peterson” with “Lacy Petersen”? Every time I heard when it first hit the news, I wondered if they were talking about that old case again.
Well, shit. It was up a minute ago, and chock full assholey goodness, including the statement that there was no claim of innocence, just to a right to a defense.
Here’s a news link.
If you are named Macy or Tracy Peterson, you better be careful.
Personally, I think he shut down the site because he already received all the money he needed. Donations probably came from these guys.
Take a guess what Stacy named her daughter.
I don’t know whether the guy in question was guilty or innocent. However, everyone is entitled to the presumption of innocence – but if I sent every person under investigation for murder a couple of dollars for their defence, I’d very quickly run out of dollars.
He knows he can get a lawyer for free, doesn’t he?
There is a reason that the State funds public defenders.
Personally, given the way Peterson has grandstanded for the press, after he got himself legal counsel, I can’t imagine that he’d use the money wisely. ISTR that the consensus here on the Dope was that he should effing shut up before he convinces the whole of the US public that he did it, and is gloating. If he’s too stupid to listen to his lawyer, when it was his own money paying for the advice, why should I believe he would use it wisely, now?
I am not following the case but if my freedom was on the line I would want more than a court appointed attorney.
Would you feel entiteled for the public to pay for it (especially if you were guilty?)
The jails are full of people who would like better than a public defense. Some of them aren’t even guilty. Why is Peterson more special than they are?
The problem is that, while I agree with you about the desirebility of having one’s own lawyer over a PD, I really don’t see that Drew Peterson has anyone to blame for the shitstorm he’s facing, now, but himself. And my sympathy for him is pretty low.
I’m not saying that he did it, or not. I really don’t know. I’ll admit that I suspect he may have done it, just based on the coincidental deaths and disappearances that seem to be clustered around him. But what really left me convinced that he’s scum (whether he killed her or not) is the way he’d responded to the media attention he started getting. Which is a large part, IMNSHO, of why he’s facing such trouble, now - he came off as a gloating asshole on national TV, and suddenly everyone and his uncle wants to see him punished for something.
I do believe he’s facing the modern equivalent of the Stocks, at the very least. He made his bed, let him lay in it. If I had the money to support someone’s defense, I could find a number of local cases where I’d be more pleased to help someone. Or I’d actually donate again to the ACLU.
Not if he has any assets. You’re not entitled to a free defense unless you’re basically indigent. Which presumably a cop isn’t. 7
I am not sure what you mean here? If the public wants to contribute to my legal defense I would gladly accept the money. Probably even more so if I was guilty and needed a top team to baffle them with bullshit.
Again I am missing your point.
He’s got his retirement funds, (ETA: Rather generous ones, as well.) let him eat ramein, and take the cost of an attorney out of those.
Just that I’m unsympathetic to his predicament. I killed my wife and I don’t want to spend my own money on a legal defense. Boo hoo.
There isn’t even a Google cache of it.
not at the moment. He hasn’t been charged with anything.
From what I’ve seen, he’s a jerk, etc., but damn, folks - remember Richard Jewell? He, too, was a person of interest, needed legal service, but was inelligible for free counsel.
I am a Person for GREAT Justice. But alas, I have no dollars to spare …
Especially not for that creepy weirdo.
