It can be a thing, an action or a feeling, to probably just name a few. For me, I’m addicted to eating Sweet and Salty almond granola bars and drinking black cherry flavored water. I’m also addicted to eBay, having my toenails painted wild colors and dance shows. And those are just right off the top of my head.
Now how about y’all? There has to be many Dopers out there with lots of good and interesting addictions. Tell us about 'em.
I’d have to say coffee and caffeine. It’s kind of both and it’s only a morning thing, so I know it’s part real and part psychological.
For instance, to start my day I need COFFEE. Just a Coke wouldn’t do it, even if the Coke had the same amount of caffeine. Something about the coffee itself is also needed.
I rarely get headaches but if I skip coffee in the morning too many days I’ll get the really bad, “no caffeine headache”
Diet cherry limeades from Sonic. No, really. I have one pretty much every day because I either go there or make one at home ever since I was given a pretty kick ass recipe.
I’d say I’m probably addicted to exercising because I love how it makes me feel and I don’t want to skip it. I exercise every day unless I’m pretty sick.
Exercise. Well, I mean, not to the point where I’m running on a broken leg, but I almost always go on Saturday afternoons, for example (among many other times). Last weekend I had this cold I was trying to flush out of my system and I felt kind of crappy but I knew I’d feel worse if I didn’t go.
CHOCOLATE! I don’t go a day without eating any. But the gym going combined with my excellent metabolism keeps me trim.
The Internet. I constantly check the Dope, my blog, twitter, my e-mail. I’ve become what I hate!
Coffee. I have, at times, managed to get my intake down to 2 reasonable coffee-cup size cups a day, but never kicked completely.
Chocolate, even though a lot gives me a migraine.
Pistachio nuts. Measure out a handful? Ha!
My computer. I read, e-mail, and surf an hour in the morning and an hour at night. If I don’t, there are two long-ass hours in the day where I feel there’s something…wrong.
I’ve actually had withdrawal symptoms when I couldn’t find anything to read for a while. (Irritably, problems concentrating, fantasizing about if-only-I-had-a-novel-now- those are actual withdrawal symptoms, aren’t they?)
My computer. I’m online way too much! But only when I don’t have anything better to do.
I do drink caffeine a lot but only when I have migraines because it helps sometimes. But that’s only a week each month or less. I will probably be drinking more soon because I will have to get up and go to work early every day, but I’m happy about that
Oh yeah, good one. I don’t think I’ve ever had withdrawal symptoms, only because I’ve never been without a book for long enough. Though sometimes if I’m having trouble getting something decent or getting into a book, I feel like there’s something wrong and I’ll feel annoyed, like, I need a good book to sink my teeth into.
Also every time I’m nearing the end of a book, I try to have another lined up in the near future (trying to make sure I can get one to come in at the library or finding something that I already own that I can reread).
The almond ones are great, but I swear the Trail Mix with 70% chocolate chunks in it also include cocaine as an ingredient! One of those, with a can of Coke Zero makes me very happy! Such a yummy combination!
I’m addicted to hockey. 1.5 years ago I had never watched a game, and now I’m annoyed when there isn’t one on TV in the evenings. I don’t follow individual players or even team stats (barely keep up with the Habs details), but I just love watching the game, especially the goalies. It’s so fascinating.
Paddling. Dragon boat and outrigger canoeing, which are both tough to do in the winter (yay for an indoor basin!) but so much fun in the summer. I was up to 4-5 times a week last summer, and now my 2 indoor practices a week are just barely enough.I just want to paddle, all the time! I can’t be motivated to do other sports/exercises, though!
and the internet, even if I’m not doing anything I’ll just sit at my computer crawling from site to site viewing whatever catches my interest for a moment or an hour (or eight)
I’m now ten days “sober” from soda pop. Even when I’ve been in remote areas of countries like Egypt, China, and India, I made sure to have my daily fix.
Otherwise, the internet and music. I will buy more music and not even listen to it while buying more.
Nicotine- in the form of cigarettes. I haven’t smoked in a very long time now, but I still want one every time I see someone else with one (even on TV) and if I had access to one I know I would start smoking again in a heartbeat.
Television- mainly sitcoms and cooking shows, even if I am not actively watching it or paying attention. I can’t fall sleep without the television on either, so I set the timer to turn off after I am asleep so it doesn’t drive my husband insane.
The Internet- I am a stay at home wife and mother and I boot up my laptop as I am making breakfast in the mornings, surf all day off an on (between chores and what not) and shut it down only when I head to bed sometime around 1:00 AM. I am not focused on it 24/7 but it is at my fingertips if I decide to google something or if I am bored. I also tend to surf as I watch TV or converse with family or what-not. I get edgy if I am away from the internet for too long (which is why I have a laptop now, so it can go with me on vacations and road trips etc.).
Probably other things that I can’t think of right now.
I take one big trip every year, and spend the rest of the year planning the next trip. I never went anywhere until I was 45, so I have a lot to make up for.
