What the F**K was that little display by Smyth? Isn’t he your hockey team’s CAPTAIN?
“Oh, I am so upset that you are winning that I am going to attack your skates! Bad skates! BAD!”
For those not glued to the hockey championships, the team captain of Canada, with 12 seconds to go in a 3 - 0 sweep by the Czechs started a fight with ??? by hitting his skates with his stick, for like 10 seconds. He looked like a hockey-version of a cowboy trying to make someone ‘dance’ by shooting at their feet. The puck-action is about 30 feet away, and this tool is trying to knock someone off their feet because he is upset that the Czechs just happened to have played a great game. It has got to be the most childish thing I have ever seen in professional sports.
And of course, it erupts into a small fight with others. But I did notice 2 Canucks trying to calm things down and stop their teamates from making further idiots of themselves. Good on them, bad on the others.
That man had better be punished. Immaturity of that level should never be accepted, especially in a role-model position like team captain.
(Not to contradict the OP – it certainly wouldn’t shock me if a hockey player paid lip-service to sportmanship after making an ass out of themselves on the ice.)
Didn’t see the game TomCat but if what you say is true, Yep, I’m embarassed.
Smyth is no rookie and he should know better. Having said that, what does it say about this years version of Team Canada when Smyth is captain. However, no excuses, it sounds stupid and I apoligize for all the real hockey fans here.
I’m not surprised by the outcome though. The Czechs have always had our number. They have a way of taking our passion and make us shoot ourselves in the foot with it.
BTW, my Dad is Czech and the drool is still running down his chin.
I did see Smyth’s display, and TomCat has it right. Smyth had a little fit, and tried to take it out on Fischer’s ankles. Why Fischer just stood there and took it is a mystery to me. Vokoun shouldn’t have stepped in, though. That’s what caused the melee to erupt. As to punishment, what do you want? He was penalized, and his team lost. No one was hurt on the play, so a suspension isn’t warrented in this case.
Smyth’s younger brother played for the Columbus Cottonmouths when we were in the ECHL - my first gamer was his. He was a very nice young man, and a fairly skilled player. I’m sorry to hear his brother showed his butt. Wish I could have seen the game - symptoms of HWS (hockey withdrawal syndrome) started showing up about a week after the end of the season.
