Are you done shoveling/blowing snow for the winter?

looking out at the back garden, the snow levels are starting to look about what we normally expect around Christmas time.

I don’t know whether to envy you or not. I love winter, and I love snowy blizzards as long as I don’t have to go out into them. Winter is beautiful.

But OTOH the birds singing outside my window heralding the coming of spring is pretty nice, too. I’m sure there are precocious flowers popping up out of the ground somewhere, too, and the grass is greening. And I’m in Canada.

Sadly, the funds I wasted on the snowplow guy who didn’t have to do anything this winter leaves me with fewer reserves for the lawn mowing guy who is going to be due within about a month or so. My mentor in life is Roseanne Roseannadanna: “It’s always something. If it’s not one thing, it’s another”.

The tractor did not want to plow uphill, so I put the front chains on this afternoon. Hard on the back, putting chains on. Almost looks like winter out there!

Replying to myself…

No hope of kayaking, the lake has too much ice. But it’ll be 13+C for a couple of days. I’m disappointed but it was always a long shot.

Yeah. Mine is chained up front and rear as is my plow truck. Those are a pain to put on.

We only got about 8" out of this last storm. They blew the forcast.

We got about 6 to 8 inches; pretty gentle but steady on the weekend.

This morning, bright clear day, blue sky and sunny; temp had dropped down to -22 when I was driving to work.

About 22 below here. Neighbours are out in their backyard hottub.

Several years ago we had a thread about whether it was necessary to specify negative temps in Canadian winters.

Had an example of that this morning. I was attended a session with a fellow from Ottawa. Morning temp was about -25. Moderator who was introducing the speaker said, “And after today, he’s going back to Ottawa, where it’s 16. 16 above, that is.”

Seemed perfectly normal to clarify that “16” in this context meant above, not below.

Bahhhh… 22 inches expected by Saturday. Need to go get gas for my plow truck today.

There’s warnings out for a thundersnowmaggedonpocalysezzard. (Although the thunder is only predicted in the rain-changing-to-snow phase.) 18-24 inches predicted tonight thru Th night. 40mph winds.

Went to the grocery store this AM as usual. Thought nobody here did a run on stores when snow was predicted. Oops.

See you on the other side, Ray.

2 feet of snow yesterday and last night. I work from home, but my Wife still goes in. No one is going anywhere until I plow though. I may also have to do the County Rd. We are last on their list.

We got a foot of wet snow (temps hovering about 31) Wed. night after some rain (no thunder). During a break in the weather Thur, went out and shoveled one side of the driveway. A lot of neighbors had the same idea. Too high and heavy for the snowblower. Enough sunlight was coming thru that it helped clear things up and warm the bare-ish spots. Of course the snow plow came by while I was out and gave me a good snow berm to clear out.

Last night got several more inches but the bare spots were warm enough to melt there for the most part. This morning went out to semi-finish the job. I have a lot of sidewalk. Took a good while.

In some places I had to “triple dig”. Cut off the top third, throw, next third, throw, bottom third, throw.

While I was out the sun sort of came out and the wind picked up. The Sun made me too warm for a long sleeve shirt. The wind made it too cold to go without.

There wasn’t too much wind when the snow was falling so the drifts are “mild”:, The usual one in the backyard is about 2.5’ high.

Might get more snow next week.

So no, not done shoveling.

Ended up with 3 feet of snow in a period of 48 hours. I’ve got us plowed out and my wife dug her car out and already left for work. She’s trying to make up time/get things done.

I still need to dig out my car, and then plow where the cars get parked. I need to make a beer run too, getting low.

The county finally plowed our road. They always use a 6 wheel drive motor grader with a blade on the front, a wing blade and the blade underneath. Impressive machines. They still had to come through twice. So to the end of the road, back to the beginning and do it again.

Our 6 foot fence is nearly buried. I might have to add the 4’ extension I rigged up. Make sure the dogs don’t get out.

We will still get significant snow through all of April. May is a crap shoot.

Saw that the 6WD grader at Eldora (4’ in 36 hours) got stuck plowing the shelf road and they were closed for 2 days. Not much you can do with 4’ at Eldora!

Getting one of those stuck would be a nightmare. Self recovery is really not an option. “Hello? Boss, yeah, seem to have a bit of an issue”

Plowing, even just my driveway is frightening with this kind of snow. I’ve got a 10,000 lb Warn winch on the back, 100’ of 1/2" cable. And straps to make it longer and straps for trees. Pully for the cable to change direction, or double it’s power. Truck is chained up on all 4 tires.

But you can still get it stuck. Especially if there is not a tree in the right place to winch from. I actually winched from an 18" concrete caisson that supports my deck earlier this year. Had to pull the truck sideways.

Had my hip replaced in 2020. Was laid up for the winter so I hired a guy to plow. I ended up pulling him out with my truck 3 times. He did not ask to renew the contract

So a couple days ago I was thinking “SPRING’S HERE!” [officially March 19th this year]. Today when I looked out the window there was a couple inches of snow on the ground.

We had a couple of bursts of snow here in the Chicago area today: one early in the morning, and another mid-afternoon. It all amounted to maybe an inch or two here in the western suburbs, but didn’t stick to pavement, for the most part. I did not have to shovel; by the time I got home from work at 8pm, the pavement was just wet.

That said, up closer to the Wisconsin state line, and in the Rockford area, they got more like 6 to 8 inches.

Yea, it wasn’t enough to shovel but I did take the broom to all window glass and horizontal surfaces.

Sheesss. We got another 2 feet last night. That makes about 8 for March. April is also a heavy snow month.

I don’t have anywhere left to put it.

We got about 3" of very icy snow a couple of days ago. It’s supposed to be in the 50’s for several days starting today, though; I just cleared off the steps and a path across the porch, and will let the rest of it just melt. I did need to take a shovel to the porch, though.

Traditionally we get a major snowstorm somewhere around the middle of March. The way the rest of the winter has been going in this area, though, that qualifies in comparison as a major snowstorm; so maybe that was it. I wouldn’t count on it, though; we had March in February, so I’m worried that we might get February in April or even May.

Here in NE MN we almost made it. We’ve had no snow on the ground since January. We never took out the snowblower and only scraped or swept off the patio when we had a few dustings. I’d been wearing my tennies when walking the dogs on the sidewalk and in the woods since January. All unheard of. Well, we now have 17" of snow and giant snowbanks. We’re starting all over :confounded:
