You guys have seen Topgun right? Tom Cruise movie from the mid 80’s?
You know the scene where they fly by the tower and the guy inside spills coffee on himself? Then he goes down and starts yelling at the officers while Tom Cruise and Anthony Edwards are standing at attention outside. He then storms out and runs into a guy carrying a tray of coffee. The person carrying that tray?
That was filmed twenty years ago this summer if you can believe that. I was in the Navy at the time and stationed at Miramar NAS where they filmed much of the movie.
Not famous by a long shot. My name has appeared in print millions of times, but nobody reads down the credits far enough to get to the indexer (unless they are related).
If you shot in the N-SSA, you might know me, but that’s just my personality, not my skill.
I used to have a column in Movieline (back in the '90s, before it was taken over by trained chimps), and have written five books on old movie and stage stars, which have a tiny but devoted readership.
I so hate to see Eve sell herself short. She is a tremendously talented writer, who has taken subjects of the Great Fame Machine given little due, and illuminated their importance, with beaucoups of fine show-biz history as well. In the process, she’s been brushing wings/in the trenches with the legendary Fam-ed, and has an amazing overview of the GFM from the turn of the century onward.
Old time SD folks know all this, but thought I’d bring it up for new folks.
And, Eve, weren’t you in a John Waters film or two?
I had roughly 15 minutes of fame in the music industry a few years ago when I got a very large record distributor shut down after I blew the whistle on their criminal activities. Got a one paragraph write up in Billboard and a local industry rag. Now I’m just a piece of faded music industry history. But a few people still remember me as the guy who got PCOS shut down.
I’m mildly famous amongst British teenage girls around the ages of 13 to 17 as I write novels for them. The most famous thing I do is go into schools and talk about my books to encourage kids to write… I do the odd writing workshop too. Beyond that, you wouldn’t know me unless your penchant was for teenage literature.
Wow, thanks for all the interesting answers, everyone. There’s actually a few of you whose names I probably would recognize, or at least would have a friend or two who would recognize you.
As for myself, I’m utterly unfamous, but someday I may manage to make a name for myself in certain academic circles.
I film August 13th for a show on MTV. I’m not sure when it’s going to air yet, but I do know that they are coming to my hometown for ten days to recreate and interview on my role in a high school prank I did. Looks like they are centering the show on my role in the prank since I planned it and thought it up.
Does that make me famous? Probably not. It will make me cocky for about five days after it is on tv… then, I’ll probably never speak of it again.
I’m just doing it for the fun anyways.
(I recorded the prank! If anyone wants to see it firsthand and unedited, get in touch with me and I’ll send it to you.)
Only in my own mind.
I’m not in Wikipedia or the IMDB (I just checked). You can Google my name and get lots of hits. I edit for a scientific magazine and regularly publish columns there. i’ve published in lots of places, but if you didn’t know me before it’s unlikely that you’ve heard of me.
I was at theMasters SW Regionals when this thread was active so I missed it. I didn’t think anyone else on this board rowed. I have no idea who the heck you are (although I’m really shitty with names) but if you’re all that, we probably know some of the same people…
