Not meaning everyday being scared of giants, but say, finding giant creatures in movies scary. Or if you have nightmares, having them often be about giants.
I was watching “War of the Worlds” with my wife and I found it scarier than her because of those big walking killing machines. Likewise, the walkers from “Empire Strikes Back” and the T-Rex from “Jurassic park” were always pretty scary for me.
My wife said it is a common male fear that women don’t usually have. What say you?
I’m not a psychiatrist, though I do play one on these boards. But I think it may have to do with Little Boy Imagination Games that they might revisit when they see movies like this. They harken back to the days when they were playing monster with their buddies or something. Little girls play house with dolls, and subsequently tend to freak out when they have their own children.
I’ve never heard of this as a strictly male fear.
I’ll bet your wife would change her mind about its gender specificity after her first T. Rex chased her.
No, I can’t say that giant things do scare me. I mean, I certainly would be scared if I ran into a T.rex, but it’s not something that haunts my dreams.
My fears are basically spiders and anything below me in an ocean. So, if I was swimming in the ocean and a harmless whale surfaced beside me, I’d be scared. But I wouldn’t be scared of a whale on land.
Maybe it’s a macho thing, the fear of big things, I mean. For some, I must add, not all.
All Humans start out as tiny people called children. Adults are huge, & can be loud & frightening. Boys tend to be more trouble than girls at a young age, & may have more memories of angry, scolding or shouting adults.
That’s all your dreams are. Merely the distorted recollections of a childhood scolding.
If recurrent, take a moment at bedtime to recall some golden moments from your childhood; the good times.
When I was quite young I had a nightmare that recurred about once a year involving giants. Male purple giants, specifically, who would come into town and start wrecking it, until some female purple giants showed up and scared them off. Haven’t had that nightmare for a couple decades at least, which is too bad because I loved it.
I enjoy movies with giant predators because of the thrill of trying to escape them. There’s always an alleyway or cave you can dive into and get away, leaving them to wait while you think up a plan to escape.
But the teeth are scary. More specifically, being alive while they chew through bones. Seeing the two T. Rexes split the guy in the second Jurassic Park was nasty (but cool).
There’s something inherently fun about running from something huge (This is probably that little kid thing). But, ideally, it would be something large, but otherwise harmless. Think “Stay-Puft.”
Never thought about it having childhood roots, makes sense. I was thinking it was more predominant in men because on average we are bigger and stronger than women. So in some way we may be used to having more physical power. Since giants mean a loss of physical power, men get a bit more freaked out with the loss.
Giant monster things don’t scare me, because it’s usually understood you can outrun them unless you’re that stupid female character who always trips & falls down.
For me it’s quite the opposite. I’m not all that scared of giant things. I can see them and will generally know I’m in it the presence of a giant. I might get my ass kicked but at least I’ll know it in advance so I can prepare. Tiny things like spiders and bugs scare me though.
