Are you ready for Ren-Faire?

Ok, people. I know there are some rennies out there.Where do you go? Are you ready? Do you dress up? Do you have a character? Do you have pics of your get-up?

I have attended the Texas Rennaisance Festival 4 times, and this is my second year to dress up. I don’t really have a solid character yet. My pic on the SDMB People Pages is of me in last years garb. This year I am working on a dress like this. I had to reconfigure a pattern of a regular smock dress to do it, 'cause I couldn’t find an affordable pattern of the actual irish dress.
I also made costumes for my kids. They were sooo cute! This year I’ve made a kilt for my 6 year old son. He’s still all for dressing up. My 11 year old, however, told me to get bent - he isn’t wearing garb and he sure as hell isn’t gonna wear a kilt, lol.
BunnyPapa dressed up last year, but sissied out halfway through the day. He claims he was too hot. Yeah, I bet. This year I’m working on a kilt for him, too. Whether or not it gets done remains to be seen. I’ve discovered that there is a big difference in the difficulty level of pressing and sewing pleats for a 4T waist compared to a 48 mens waist  .

So Dopers, tell me about your Ren Faire plans!

I’ve only been once or twice, but this summer we got dressed up. I got the “Lady’s Outer Dress” from Museum Replicas (http://store.museumreplicas.com/cgi-bin/www11650.storefront/)

It was a blast - much more fun when you dress up. I don’t have a character per se, but ended up calling myself “Lady Packer” after I realized I was wearing green & gold.

Hey! There’s a big EverQuest gathering at the Ren Faire down in Texas this year. I plan on making the trek down from Utah for this, any other Dopers going to this event?

That’s a pretty dress, I have gone to the Utah Shakespearian Festival and the Scottish Festival dressed up. It’s much more fun then dressing as a plain old boring modern person.

Well I WANT to be a Rennie but I don’t know of any Ren-Faires up here but since I am moving I have discovered a group called the Society for Creative Anachronism and I plan to look into joining them when I’m all settled…

Yeah, he probably just thinks he’s not manly enough to wear a kilt… Celtic guys are, of course, total studs, as everyone knows, and if a less-than-macho guy wore a kilt, he just wouldn’t fit in.

Why, yes, I am Irish… Why do you ask?

Don’t I know it! I have sooo got a thing for men in kilts! The mere sight of plaid makes my blood pressure go up!

And with his firey red hair my oldest would be just adorable.Oh well.
I threatened him with death if he ever teased the 6 year old about wearing a ‘dress’, though. I don’t wanna lose this one too, hehe.

Athena - What a lovely dress! ‘Lady Packer’, indeed!

I haven’t had the opportunity to go but I would love to.
Especially since I have one dress and corset that I made for Samhain and I am starting a chemis and overdress here soon for this year!
I am in Iowa and I think the closest one that I have heard of is in Wisconsin. If anyone knows of any closer please let me know. I have a few other people who would be interested and I know a few men who wear kilts!
Gotta love those legs!

sighs happily at the thought of a man in a kilt Oh I know how good guys look in Kilts. You should have seen my Uncle’s wedding pics (They had a Scottish wedding)… I would have married him myself if he wasn’t my uncle and already married.

I worked at the Ren-Faire a couple of years ago. My cousin did it for years and loaned me her costumes. It’s very weird to be someone else in a different time then become “yourself” again at the end of the day. It was absolutely the coolest experience of my life- I’d do it again if it wasn’t for babypotomus.

…mmmm…still thinking about boys in kilts…

New York Renaissance Faire, Tuxedo NY

Due to driving distance I am only able to attend one day a year. I don’t know when I’m going to be able to get there this year.

I have been going in costume for the past 18 years. The kilt embarasses my older daughter. Now I have a nice blue “wizard’s robe” that is more to her liking.

I try to explain the history and ethnic pride issues tied in to the wearing of a kilt. She won’t listen. She thinks the fact that we are not Scottish has some bearing on the matter…

Sorry about putting the whole post before my reply. I work at TRF. This will be my 6th year. What cracks me up is when people think we are volunteers. I make decent money on commission for a hard days work. I would recommend a Kilt for a guy since it is still hot the first couple of weeks. I am burning up at that time of TRF.

My outfits are variations of peasant clothes. I do have a couple of jester hats. The cooler it gets, the cooler my outfit gets. But I am just a regular, in costume bloke who is up to no good and messes with people.

I work for Nichols Games. All the Sherwood Forest games and many outside are Nichols. I will likely be on the Kings Swing back towards the Italian villiage, although I have done several games. I was on the swing last year also. I was a big shaved head guy (of course, headgear is required for us), nowadays one of several. Working there is a blast also, although it is physically exhausting. My feet and body will hurt the first week, but I am totally energized during the work week. My fun is connecting with my old buddies at night camping on-site. We used to be able to walk the site at night, and that was the biggest thrill. But problems happened and we have to stay mostly outside. Toward the end the actors put on little shows at night. The most hilarious was a Jerry Springer spoof (yes, we get out of period talk at night).

I wanna go. But one, I have no clothes for it. And two, none of my friends ever want to go with me. sigh

(Psst, hey, could somebody post information on the Texas one? Or email it to me?)

The renfaire near my house comes in February, and I have a friend I met at this event last year that I’m dying to see in a kilt again. [Damn, I love those legs of his.] I still have to get the handbook, etc. from the people who run this before I can make a costume. I’m hoping the pattern I have for one will be acceptable. If not, I can run down to a costume store and get a corset [and then to a store that sells metal boning], then make everything else. I am kinda psyched about this. I just love renfaires, and am thinking of driving an hour south just to go to the Italian renaissance festival down in Miami.

Who the hell are you. You oviously know who I am.
Or is that phrase the standard?

Kricket - I don’t know how up to date their info is, but this
page lists several renfaires in Iowa. Maybe one is near you?

Topaz - The wedding sounds like it was a real feast for the eyes! Lucky you for getting to go! Weren’t there any single men to chase around? That’s a shame, lol.

Dr. Fi - Does your daughter dress too? Or has she already outgrown it? I’m sure the time isn’t far away when my oldest will want to avoid being seen with us ‘weirdos’, too. His loss - I know who he’ll come crawling back to when he needs garb sewn  .

Cooldude - Man, I gotta hand it to you guys who work the faire. Y’all really do bust your humps. And I love the Swing, we didn’t get a chance to do it lst year. How about that rain? See you in November!

Mamapotamus - I love your name, we must start a crittermom union sometime  . I have to admit, I envy you and cooldude. I can’t imagine how much fun it must be to be one of the ‘insiders’ at renfaire. Maybe someday when the young’uns are grown…

Falcon - Where are you? I’d gladly take you, and help you sew to boot! I’m sure you’d just love it. Come on down to Texas!

I worked the Test of Strength a couple years back & thats what we did. My cousins S/O works year-round for the Nichols, they live on site.

Here ya go, Zoing.
You might also check the link I left for Kricket, since there are several in Texas and maybe one is closer to you.
