Arena-- straight to video. It should still make sense, right? [Big Fat Spoilers]

Saw this movie on Netflix and was suprised that it wasn’t has horrible as expected. It advertised it starred Samuel L. Jackson and, sure enough, he’s one of the stars. Also starring some drooly guy and a woman who liked being naked a lot.

Lemme see if I can summarize this movie quickly. Sam Jackson chews the scenery along with two Asian hot computer graphic girls as the CEO of a company that makes big bucks running a Fight Club type deal with kidnapped men.

Drooly guy’s pregnant wife gets killed in a car crash, he tried to kill himself but can’t and ends up getting kidnapped to fight in the Arena. Thing is, even if you win, The Executioner will kill you because we all know internet people are vicious assholes.

Hero wins fights, drools, wins more fights, drools some more, gets all kinds of fucked up while fighting and promises to kill The Executioner and Samuel L Jackson. Drooly ends up fighting The Executioner in the Arena, has a flashback of his wife getting killed in the car crash-- only this time he shoots a bunch of people and doesn’t try to kill himself, is recruited by some sort of law enforcement agency— flashback ends, he kills the Executioner and Naked Lady calls for re-inforcements.

If anyone beside me has seen this movie, can you explain exactly what the hell happened? He’s not David Lord, not an EMT and not a firefighter. Was that not his wife that got killed? Was he recruited by the law agency only after his wife died?

Or, something like that.

Isn’t there already a thread on giant gaping plotholes?

What would it have to do with my understanding of this movie?

I think you understood it just fine. Drooly is supposed to be an undercover cop sent to infiltrate Sam Jackson (in the second half of the movie). This is no way, shape or form explains how or why Naked Lady witnessed and/or caused the car crash.

The writers almost certainly came up with a cool sounding opening and a cool sounding ending and never bothered with the messy middle stuff.

Ah, thank you. I thought I missed something important.

As far as I can tell, he was law-enforcement before his wife was killed – in retaliation for a completely unrelated mission, during which his cover was blown.

After that blowback from the Korean op, he then went on his next assignment: go undercover as an EMT/firefighter named “David Lord”, act like you’re an athletic guy who lost the only family who’d miss you – hey, you won’t need to act much! – hit some bars down in Mexico, get kidnapped by Naked Lady, pretend to be a life-saving rescuer while gladiating your way through like a trained killer, and improvise a way to broadcast the arena’s location.

I don’t recall that she witnessed and/or caused the crash.

Hey! That plot hole thread is nine years old.

I, too, was confused about the girl at the car crash and Naked Lady. I was not sure if they were the same person. I think there may have been scenes that were cut that were needed for clarity.

I saw this last night (you had me at “woman who liked being naked a lot”) and concur with this analysis.
