Suggesting this book for a 13yr old, is odious. Doing so by pm, is very poor judgment. Defending it -just foolish. Implying the boy should override any objections his parents may have, in the pm, is crossing a line. All my opinion, and I stand by it.
I just happen to believe that if the mods would bring the hammer down a couple of times we wouldn’t be having all these train wrecks.
I honestly believe that if they’d brought the hammer down on C when the community was begging them to, AT wouldn’t have done this thing. And we could all have avoided yet another trainwreck.
I got a little heated, I admit, but if any of these opinions make me crazy then I’m prepared to live with that.

Keep in mind that literature and pornography are not mutually exclusive, and any given work may have elements of both.
Back in grad school, I did quite a bit of work in Delany, including reading all of his novels to that date, and digging through a lot of secondary materials discussing his works. Some of his novels were superior “literary” works that included a lot of kinky stuff, including child sex – Dhalgren comes to mind.
At the other end of the scale were a couple of his novels that had some tinge of literary merit, but were best categorized as porn written to challenge the reader’s views on gender, sexuality, and society’s norms in these areas. Hogg was such a work. No matter what literary value it has, it is first and foremost extreme porn, including child porn, given that the protagonist is a street child.
No, that only works regarding someone who is fairly aware and intelligent, like Argent has [del]long[/del] usually proven himself to be TO US. WE, the longtime posters, are not the only people who read here. We, and I include the more-recent posters, must learn that the SDMB is not a private preserve, viewed only by members. It’s come a long way from when I joined. We are on Google. Total strangers can find us. People for whom “longtime and trusted membership” is irrelevant. Screw Argent Towers, Cesario, and the rest. By letting the APPEARANCE remain that the SDMB harbors pedophiles, any tolerance of them damages the board and those of us who post here. Maybe you are young and do not realize the effectiveness of “guilt by association.” I am not so naive.

I doubt anything from Hogg would be appropriate for MTV. (Which I too watched when I was younger – back when they still played videos, that is)

Well, my irritation has been soothed. I just wanted AT to think about the possible consequences of his actions.
And I just would like to point out that I was a voracious reader as a child and I read a lot of gross stuff. If I had found Hogg, I probably would have read it and I wouldn’t have stopped because I found it distasteful. I don’t think 13 year olds have the self control we’d like to think they do.
Regarding Curtis’ ‘true’ identity - a while back he posted a newspaper article which he said was about him, which included a photo and quite a bit of detail. The thread was disappeared quick-smart for obvious reasons, but nothing he’s ever posted has contradicted the details in that article. The mods would still have access to that thread (and the article) and might want to comment on whether they think he’s for real or not.
People need to settle down. With the lynch mob mentality that developed after the Cesario debacle, people seem to be lying in wait for the next person to demonize.
“Hogg” is a fictional novel that I first heard about here. I Wiki’d it and was interested to learn about the author and genre of fiction. I am glad that Argent Towers shared his opinion of it with us. BTW, I have learned about other things just as shocking here on the SDMB.
To demonize AT for any mention of this fictional novel strikes me a censorship, which I do not abide.
Argent Towers is a long-time poster who contributes intelligent and thoughtful content. He maybe used poor judgment in this instance but he did not deserve the pile-on. 99.99% of the content he shares is interesting and adds to the SDMB in a positive way. Oh, and he apologized for his mistake.
Please, give it a rest! I would hate to have to see one of my favorite posters leave because of a handful of self-righteous censor-crazy uptight party poopers.

This so totally doesn’t compute to me. I cannot imagine not being a member, and making sure my kid knows it, of every message service s/he’s a member of. I cannot imagine not having the kid’s password so I can check up on him randomly if need be. Granted that it’s my job to be able to know every damn thing that happens on an internet connection, I’m confident enough in my ability to catch the kid no matter what he does, but still.
If you are privy to those details, would you post them? Because without proof REASONABLE posters are required to act as if he is whom he claims. UNreasonable posters, too.
Some people may think they understand how the Law should, ultimately, work out, but are clueless how it works from day to day. A poster here needn’t worry what the Supreme Court would ultimately say if he would be bankrupt several layers below it.
I agree with you. I would also be observant in just the way you describe. However, assuming that **CLM **is who he claims to be, I’ve not seen any indication that his Dad or Mom posts here.

That isn’t even necessary, if ones kids are as “stupid” and trusting as mine. Did they understand the pertinence of their mother’s and my adventures? Nope, we protected them from anything that would disagree disagreeably. Any idiot would see those tales, and the other ones they should’ve heard if they were paying attention, as the equivalent of mathematical word problems explained, variable by variable, by their teachers. Did I say “mathematical?” I meant “arithmetical,” as in 1 + 1 = 2. It isn’t obvious to me but it would be, both mathematically and logically, to my wife. After ten years I have given up on inviting her to post for me.
