arial font problem

For the past several weeks, I have had significant problems with my Arial font. I am running Windows 98 SE, Hebrew Enabled (but everything is in English).

Arial is such an important font, since Windows, IE, and other programs rely on it. What mostly seems to happen is when the app needs Arial in italics it either doesn’t show the text (in IE), or shows jibberish (in AIM for example).

I downloaded the newest version of Arial from the Microsoft web site, and that helped once, but then the problem was back again.

I ran a virus check, and other system checks, and nothing turned up strange.

With some of the programs, I simply switched the font from Arial (like AIM) and the problem went away. I haven’t been able to do that with IE, but if I switch the text size, sometimes the Arial in italics comes back.

Any ideas?

If the problem is occurring in the menu bar, title bar, etc.–

  1. Right click on the desktop.
  2. Select “Properties.”
  3. Select the “Appearance” tab.

At this point, you can click on the menu bar and other parts of the interface that use the Arial font and change the font to something else.

Another suggestion: Instead of just changing the font, look at which type of Arial is being used. There should be several types of Arial listed in the font box–Arial Western, Arial Central European, etc. You mentioned that your computer is Hebrew enabled; if the “Arial (Hebrew)” is selected, try changing it to “Arial (Western).”

Hope that helps!
