Arizona Cardinals safety takes off his glove...

…and his finger stays in it.

Now that’s football! The article is not for the squeamish, but apparently at some unkonwn point in the game, the top of Rashad Johnson’s left middle finger separated from his hand, and he didn’t notice.

First of all, I didn’t know fingers did that, and I’d like to think I’d notice if one of mine did. I do now find myself casting nervous glances down at my keyboard, though. “There goes one! No wait, that’s a carrot stick.”

Happily, the doctors have been able to reattach it. (Personally, losing my middle finger would leave me almost unable to drive). He has to watch out for infection, what with his stump and his stub having incubated in a sweaty grass-stained glove for a while, and there is no word on when he will be back. They play at Philly later this season, and it would be great if he made his comeback in that game, because I’m sure the Eagles fans would collectively salute his finger surgery in some appropriate way.

Love this from the article.

It’s just a finger, walk it off.

So the Saints cut off one guy’s finger and Drew Brees eviscerated the others. Gross.

Safety pin.

It’s a pretty bizarre injury for sure. Most in football are concussive as opposed to lashing. I’d like to see the video to better understand how this even happened. I’m glad though Arizona didn’t lose more of its Johnson.

These kinds of injuries do happen in football sometimes- if a guy gets a finger between two other players’ helmets just before impact, for example. Ugh. I’m trying to applaud his toughness, but given the state of injuries in football and the “warrior mentality” and all of that, I’m just nauseated.
