Closure means this whole event can be brought to a conclusion. The murderer found, the innocent vindicated, etc. Why the assumption that closure means I haven’t been able to sleep at night? It just means that what has been a mystery for the last 10 years is no longer one.
I think this is an absurd comparison. The Ramseys did nothing analogous.
I’m unaware of any evidence that the children in these pageants are statistically at any more risk for predation than any other children. Are you?
Well, at least there’s still due process in this nation.
Are you kidding me?
Holy Christ on a cracker I hate wading into these threads, 'cus it makes me look like a loonie, but here I go anyway…
I spent the majority of my childhood (up until I was about 11) “Tarted up Like a Cheap Whore” - yep - my mom put me in beauty contests, pageants, etc, etc. I have pictures of myself as a 4, 5, 6 year old in stupid outfits with big hair and tonnes of makeup and glossy, waxy lips.
Honestly - it was kind of fun. There are lots of things that I really hate my mother for, but putting me in the stupid pageants isn’t one of them.
Furthermore - had I had the misfortune to have been brutally raped and murdered as a 6 year old by some stranger (assuming that’s what happened), I really can’t reconcile the notion that my mom would be some how responsible for that. Shit, she gave me an outfit and some lipgloss - it’s not like she was selling me to the highest bidder.
Finally, if given the choice, speaking as an objective adult, I would much rather have been put in goofy costumes and made to sing and dance on stage, than be brutally raped and murdered. Now, I suppose, I’ve never actually been brutally raped and murdered, so I can’t say 100% that the pagaents are a better experience, but I’m willing to go as high as 99%.
Honestly people - pagaents are creepy. Hockey parents are creepy too but you don’t here them getting blamed for putting their kids in suggestive, masculine looking hockey pads when their coach molests them, do you.
Amen. I just watched Little Miss Sunshine and the child beauty pageant contestants (except for Olive) were some of the creepiest looking little girls I had ever seen. What parent would do that to a child?
Since he is only “under arrest”, not convicted for the unrelated sex crimes, how do you know he is a creep?
But basically I agree with your main point. I knew that with this case in particular, the usual, predictable, “STRING HIM UP!!!” mentality would be running rampant. It seems that some people–even posters right here on the good ol’ SDMB–who I think would normally be careful about not judging someone before their trial, are really chomping at the lynching bit here.
I’ll bet you a dollar to a doughnut that the guy they arrested is teaching English. All the oddballs end up teaching English overseas.
Draw your own conclusions about me.
In addition to this, I think it should also be pointed out that it still has never been shown that the pageant stuff had any connection at all to why this crime was committed. For all we know, the murderer didn’t even know about the pageants.
Think carefully about where that line of reasoning leads you, RT.
If a grown woman tarts herself up “like a cheap whore” would you say “it should shock nobody” when she is treated that way “with the predictable follow up”? Let’s not blame the victims.
I join Dio in a hearty FUCK YOU to those in the media who convicted the Ramseys without trial.
LEARN THIS LESSON: More often than not police identify a suspect and then try to build a case against that suspect, rather than conducting an objective investigation. They would rather pin the crime on an identified suspect than put themselves to the trouble of searching for an unknown perpetrator.
(I would have thought we would have learned that already from the Richard Jewell / Olympic Park bombing case, but I guess not.)
Yep, otherwise I’d tar and feather the lot of them.
There were a couple of guys who got falsely crucified in that Utah case as well. I forget the girl’s name. The one with the harp?
My mom. Trust me, I got over it.
All you pussies wringing your hands about the “Poor widdle girls” forced to participate in pagaents against their will really need to pull your heads out of your asses.
Pagaents are NOT A BIG DEAL.
Christ threads like this one piss me off.
If the Ramseys, and other pageant parents, are guilty of sexually compromising their child, should every “news” source that ran the clips and pics of JonBenet dolled up over and over and over and over and over and over and over again be charged with distributing child pornography?
Heh. I’m reminded of when my son was in Kindergarten. They had to do collages, a big sheet of construction paper divided in half, one side for “alive (with pictures of, say, trees, cats, dogs),” one side for “not alive (rocks, chairs, a hammer)”. One collage had a picture of JonBenet Ramsey. On the “not alive” side, of course.
Wait… so the pussies have heads? And the heads are up the pussies’ asses? Where are the elbows? I’m trying to picture this…
That’s the one. Thanks.
Funny thing - I thought I found a thread about the fact that the authorities had finally found the scumbag that did this.
In fact, it seems he has confessed. Of course this thread is less about that than yet another opportunity for folks to come into the Pit and just be nasty to each other.
Ah well, I should have learned by now.
I just read an article over at MSNBC which has probably the most distrubing quote I’ve read in a while.
The quote is:
Excuse me, what the fuck is this ‘They fell in love with each other’ shi’t? She was six years old.
Just fucking amazing, in a sick twisted way.
Slee
I’ve read the whole thread, but I did so while skimming other articles pertaining to this, so if I reiterate something that’s already been said, I sincerely apologize.
Now with that in mind, I found one site that specifically mentions his predilection for kids via this line: “Karr was previously arrested in April 2001 in Sonoma County on five misdemeanor charges of possessing child pornography.”
And sadly, I do think he taught English. Sorry Paul.
