Arrested Development - 3/13

Because somebody had to.

This one was kind of zany, maybe a little too much, but there were some very good one-liners. And the great visual gag with Barry jumping the shark.

He jumped it. He wooshed me. Gob and Blamey made me laugh pretty hard. When she poses with the prisoners she just looks so zany. I never would have thought that whole thing could be funny. But it’s just so funny.

By “whole thing” I mean “prisoner abuse scandal.”

By Blamey I mean Gob’s wife.

It is, right? What’s really funny is that I completely missed it. I hope I would’ve gotten it the next time through. My roommate noticed that he jumped over a shark, and I laughed at that. Menocchio made me realize that the real joke is that it’s Henry Winkler. Oh man, what a show!

“Where can I get one of those necklaces with a t on it?”
'It’s a cross…"
“Across from what?”

Another great one.

Some of my favorites:

The Burger King references

Tobias making up the vanity license plates for each role he’s up for – especially “Dr House.”

Motherboy XXX

XXX! Ha! I missed that one.

Did the Burger King thing annoy anyone? I noticed a lot of product placement last week (not GOOD p.p., because I don’t remember what!).

At least they made a joke out of it.

Overall, the episode was a bit choppy. Not as good as last week.

I just hope that somehow Maeby ends up directing the movie.

“You came back for me! Take me with you!”

I was a little off-put by the GOB/Amy relationship: in the first season, it is pretty clear that they are together for at least a few days before she ships out – she is picking out sweaters and stuff for him and they are bickering like an old married couple. That they both can’t remember the others’ name and can’t remember what the other looks like seems to be stretching it a bit.

Other than that, there were many, many good lines. I love how this show has been setting up the Buster/seal moments for at least this season, perhaps stretching back into last: the hand chair, the stuffed seal won for “marksmanship” when Buster played the crane game all day long and skipped the army, Amy’s job as a marine biologist.

I love the GOB line about the one-finned seal, how it “swimming round in circles, freaking out its family.”

She’s not directing, she’s producing! See last week’s episodes

But what she really wants to do is direct.

What I loved about seeing the toy seal was that it was not the seal, but the (al)arm off that freaked him out.

I love the fact that Tobias is playing George in the movie about the family, while Dave Atell is playing Tobias, and Dave Atell’s confusion at having to wear the denim shorts under his pants. Also, Lindsey’s reaction to Dave Atell not crying when he takes the shorts off.

Best line of the night

Maeby at the campfire "…only thing more terrifying than the escaped lunatics hook was his twisted call…

Buster “Hey campers!”

Not to mention, “If he’s straight, then I’m sober!”

Maeby’s having a lot of cravings for alcohol lately.

The Burger King thing got on my nerves too.

Oh! When George Bluth Senior had his hand over Tobias’ mouth and Tobias licked him. That was a good one. Shades of grade 3.

I thought the Burger King product placement was brilliant. Carl Weathers’ excitement about the free refills cracked me up (like his stew recipe in S1). It was probably my favorite thing in the episode along with the “I misunderestimated you” line (and the Abu Graib photo!).

I think the loss of Buster’s hand is one of the signs this show probably isn’t getting renewed, though. I don’t think the producers would make one of the lead actors wear a hook hand for the next few years. I don’t know why I think this, but for some reason that plot point seemed to say “we’re getting cancelled soon, so we don’t care if we maim our characters.” Then again I’m always thinking that this week’s AD is going to be the last.

About the GOB/Amy relationship… wasn’t the sweater scene in a “next episode” preview, hence not real? Now I’m going to have to check my DVDs to be sure…

I’m pretty sure it was a recurring gag in one episode. (“Wife of GOB?”) If you think about how far in advance they have to write and film an episode, I don’t know if they would do that as a response to getting cancelled. Also they keep voicing the hope that they can retrieve the seal… the whole thing sits weirdly with me, although it’d be pretty damn ridiculous if they find the seal days or weeks later and his hand hasn’t been digested. :stuck_out_tongue:

From the episode where they got married to the one where she ships off(the fake batchelor party, I think) GOB went around wearing a bunch of brightly colored sweaters. Thinking about it, I figured that if Amy god GOB to wear sweaters that made him look like a putz he’d have slept with her at some point, but I guess not. GOB isn’t the brightest, after all.

“I ****ed my wife!”
