Art Tatum Grammy 1973?

I discovered (via a crossword puzzle, actually) that Art Tatum received a Grammy in 1973 (actually awarded in '74 for the year '73) for an album “God is in the House”. I have tried to figure out why. The album was released in 1940. Art Tatum died in 1956. What happened in '73 to get this album a Grammy for Best Solo Performance by a Jazz Artist?

This may do better in Cafe Society.

It was a lifetime achievement award, and it was 1989. Here. Scroll down to “Acclaim”.

Ah, now it’s clear. The album didn’t win the Grammy in '73, the album notes won a grammy for Dan Morgenstern.

Art Tatum was awarded a Grammy for God Is In The House. The Grammy Awards of 1974 lists Tatum winning for Best Jazz Performance by a Soloist. Looking at at Answers.com and the Rolling Stone review it seems to me that this album was the first public release of recordings made in the 1940s. Which would enable it to earn the award in 1974.

Good find. Thanks.
