This one is no different. I have known about it since I was 14. I am now 19, what I always find interesting (and somewhat eerie) is looking back and what people were talking about and specifically nostalgic about when I was born in 2003. It’s crazy finding a thread from the month I was born about playing SNES games in 1992 and comparing it to my Wii and DS adventures of 2012.
This is really only relatable to Zoomers, specifically those born from 1997-1998 onwards, where you can easily find an archive of what people were talking about when you were born or a baby. Inthe00s is a similar site, I believe that one goes back to 1998.
I have always been a very nostalgic person myself, and I found in 2020 myself being interested in the Y2K era for some reason. March 11th (2020) was my generation’s September 11th, as that was the final day of completely normal high school I ever had, being a 2021 graduate, and I always longed for the time that immediately preceded it, and maybe that longing led me to the previous period with a similar vibe.
I guess I’m trying to live in the moment, I’m a sophomore in college now and with yet another year winding down and school ending in a few weeks, I do find it sad, but I also know that right now will be the time I’ll reminisce about as an old man, so I like to make memories and do things my way, no regrets attached.
Welcome to the Dope! Well, it sounds like you’ve been lurking for five years but thanks for putting up the periscope and posting! You are very welcome and feel free to hang out. Don’t mind the turtles, they go all the way down.
It’s been off and on I guess haha. I did have an old account from 2018 but I don’t remember the login info also I’m sure it would make me cringe by now lol. Thanks for the warm welcome!
It is one of the oldest forums still in use I assume? I have been able to find old forums that have gone down over web archive, and others like inthe00s which I think is less active.
One of the things I find really fascinating for people born in your generation or later (like my kids, Gen Alpha), is something as mundane as visiting the archives of Google Street View. I think they started around 2007 here (in Chicago), so my kids can basically go back in a time machine and see what the neighborhood and surrounding areas looked like growing up. There have been so many times I’ve been wanting to revisit c. 1988 to remember what businesses were on this corner or that, or whatnot, but you guys and younger basically have a nostalgia machine where you can revisit old places long gone or will one day long be gone. It’s fascinating for me to think about.
I feel like we are in this weird gray zone. Alpha grew up fully digital, Z did too, but we were not as immersed in it. The political climate was stable when I was a child, it is now awful. That transition began to happen in earnest when I was 12. I think it’s a much more sinister and cruel world for a 2013 kid than it was as a 2003 kid. But if you ask anybody who was born in 1993 they would likely say the same about me.
I will definitely look into seeing what my house looked like from Google street view back in 2007. I’m from a suburban community so it likely was up back then, however I remember how it looked back then so there really won’t be that many surprises.
What does get me is the pictures from when my parents bought our house in 2002. The previous owners were this older couple and they pretty much had a Time Machine back to like 1980. They didn’t have cable, had old carpet floors, and old wallpaper. So it’s weird looking at the photos and seeing my parents fixing up the house while it looked like it did when they were kids.
This thread made me curious so I went and checked Google Groups which has Usenet groups archived back into the early 90s. (I have NOT visited there in about a DECADE now.)
ALL of the Usenet groups I subscribed to are all most filled with SPAM. Pretty much completely useless.
Most of the fan content that was posted there in the 90s has shifted to Reddit.
For example, the fans that posted on rec.sports.pro-wrestling now use r/SquaredCircle.
And so and so for other topics–the Simpson, Star Trek, Star Wars.
