"Asian Girlz" by Day Above Ground: is this a joke?

Oh, really, it’s gone? Well… may I interest you in a variety of videos of African-American girls being cast as the “Ho”, still out there with little outcry. (yes, it’s a pet peeve of mine)

Yea, the young turks called it “The most racist music video in existence” and my eyes rolled so hard I think I sprained something.

Some shitty band made a shitty song about how they have a bad case of yellow fever. The outrage is entirely manufactured. Hell, the band probably loves it because they are getting way more attention than they would otherwise.

Being knowingly offensive is not the same the same thing as satire. It’s the difference between Rush Limbaugh and Stephen Colbert.

If not for the explicit video (though it could have been more explicit), I don’t think this would raise the ruckus we’re seeing. Using racist language may have ruffled a couple of feathers, but not enough for this kind of reaction. And it’s flat out stupid. There’s a cultural meme being illustrated here, complaining about the people who point it out isn’t going to help anything. If they’re intentions were not satirical it hardly matters, it actually enhances the satirical quality of an unintended result if that were the case.

Well, it’s obviously a joke song, but I think that there is an element of satire in it. Maybe I’m giving the band too much credit, but I do read it as a send-up of a certain white quasi-fetishization of Asian women. I read it as them making fun of these guys, not celebrating them in a joking manner. You might read it differently. Like I said, it’s not particularly good satire.

I think he’s agreeing with you, that it was satire, not just meant to be offensive. I think it’s good satire, my judgement being somewhat biased by the presence of a gorgeous almost totally naked model, but they have lost the message in the controversy.

Yeah, he is. I was using the quote as a jumping off point for my thoughts and forgot to remove it. Didn’t mean to make it sound like I was contradicting Little Nemo.

My problem with the satire is that it’s just really, really trite and unimaginative. I like a little more subtlety in my satire.

You’re right about that. Having something not so blatant and obvious in the lyrics, or the video might have helped get the point across.

the link isn’t working anymore. I wonder if it got taken down already

The singing is awful
The girl is hot

Speaking as a ninja, I am highly offended. That’s it, I’m out of here.

(throws smoke bomb)
(wooden flute)

You know what’s offensive? Those awful tattoos.

Never heard of this band.

Lord Jesus, if the people here could ever let the tattoo thing go just once… Just ONCE, dear Lord…

It’s obviously a tongue in cheek joke song aimed more at the white men who fetishize Asian girls than at Asian girls themselves. I can’t believe there’d be any debate about that.

How can you tell it’s not a song by some white men who fetishize Asian girls? The whole point of any satirical work is that it’s supposed to be based on something that wasn’t satirical. You can’t have irony without sincerity to base it on. If you’re saying that parodies of bad racist songs exist than you’re acknowledging that genuine bad racist songs exist to be parodied. And maybe this video is an example of that.

I would, but I’m not here.

Knock this shit off.

If the aforementioned line about ninja pussy didn’t clue you in, the part in the middle where the guy begrudgingly accepts celebrating the New Year in February as if it was some huge sacrifice must have.

Or, even better, (since broken links piss me off to no end, too, although cut and paste links are somewhat an improvement, but still require too much work), why not use the spoiler tags like some posters do to fulfill the two-click rule?

Yes, I realize I’m talking about being too fucking lazy to cut and paste something in my browser but, seriously, it makes it a lot easier, especially if you’re surfing on a smart phone or tablet. It’s literally just two clicks. First world problems, I know.

I can see why you’d prefer it, then. I almost never surf from a tablet so I just highlight and right click and I can open the link in a new tab.
