Ask the comic guy..

Ummm…could you be a bit more specific? There are a bazillion and one doctors who became horribly deformed trying to get super-powers, but here’s a few:

Doctor Doom: One of his experiments blew up in his face, horribly scarring him. Probably not him.

Doctor Bong (I’M NOT KIDDING!): Accidentally cut off his hand - replaced it with a metal ball, started wearing a bell on his head.

Doctor Octopus: Wasn’t really trying to get super-powers, but I’d call four metal tentacles fused to your spine a deformity.

Doctor Demonicus: Tried to give himself super-powers by exposing himself to radiation, gave himself skin cancer instead.

Doctor Hydro: Tried to get super-powers, tuned himself into an amphibian.

The Lizard: Tried to regrow his missing arm, turned himself into a giant lizard.

Any of those ring a bell?

I think that the original retcon of Black Adam not being guilty of his present day crimes was done in the last incarnation of Shazam! It was already established when he showed up in JSA.

I know Peter David used him in Aquaman for something minor, then I think he showed up in the Underworld Unleashed stuff. IIRC, he sold his soul to become more at home under the ocean and Neron transformed him into a humanoid manta. I think he showed up again in Aquaman after Peter left, but I was dropping it at that point and I am not sure.

Yeah, in a multi part storyline involving pretty much every speedster that has ever appeared in Flash, including Barry Allen. I can’t find my copies, but I can’t think of the title of the storyline and I can’t find my copies of the story. Chained Lightning maybe? Fenris!!

Lok

What Lok and Minor Irritant said.

And Lok’s correct: it was Chained Lightning, which was roughly Flash 140-150, give or take. I thought it was a fairly weak story. It went on forever, and was kind of an overreaction and slap in the face to the idiocy that Kevin Dooley was perpetuating on Green Lantern (“The fans are too dumb to understand that there’s multiple people with the same powers, so Kyle is the only one who can have that power or name”). Plus it had a dumb gimmick:

And it turns out that Cobalt Blue was Barry Allen’s long lost twin brother, or his long lost twin brother’s descendant or something…something…and Professor Zoom was Cobalt Blue’s descendant too, so Prof. Zoom is directly related to Barry Allen. All of which I thought was stupid.

And no prob, Sam: I’m happy to answer when/what I can.

Fenris

White Quessn said that recently? She stole it then. Back in the late 80’s or early 90’s there was a two-issue comic/award show call World’s Worst Comics, where they gave silly awards for actual comics. They dealt with the issue of nearly non-existent femal costumes. There was one Marvel villianess (Nekra?) who explained “a guy can’t fight with an erection.”

Hmmm…I just read that ( I love the scene where they’re trying to give the little kid super-powers)… I thought the White Queen said it, but now I’m not sure that I’m not misremberingl.

Damn… Now I have to go back through my X-Men…

Fenris

I know what all those words mean, but I can’t quite parse the first part so that it makes sense with the second part.

[sub]Wait, did you mean “Damn” like “Hot-Damn!”, as in, “Oh goodie!”[/sub]

It was revealed in Cosmic Powers Unlimited that Galactus first creation was a being named Tyrant. Rather than being a servant, Tyrant was intended as a companion. Later, Tyrant turned on Galactus. Tyrant got his butt kicked, but was allowed to live.
Earth X-Revealed Galactus purpose in the universe(along with all kinds of stupidity and art chronically unsuited to the story)
First, Long Time Info-
Way back when, Earth was inhabited by proto humans. The Celestials show up. They study and test some apes. Then, they change some of them. One group is given physical beauty and vast superhuman powers. They become known as the Eternals. One group is given hideousness, an unstable genetic code(their kids often look like no relative. Lizard-like parents may have an insectiod kid, or an avian kid, etc) and occasional vast superhuman powers. They become the Deviants. The third group of apes is given a latent genetic potential. They remain outwardly the same. These apes evolve into us. Mutants like the X Men are the next step, the activation of that potential.
Earth X Added
Vibranium was also placed here by the Celestials. A Celestial egg incubates in our planet. When the egg hatches, the Celestial will have no physical form and will fashion itself a body of vibranium. But before it is in the armor, the Celestial is vulnerable. The Celestials changed the human race so that we would be more aggressive. Their the cause of all human hatred and violence. Their plan was that the human race would become super human at the time of hatching. Thus, we would unknowingly defend the infant Celestial from harm.
Galactus purpose is to find worlds that incubate Celestial eggs and destroy them. Luckily, in the course of retconning all of Marvel history, ruining almost all Marvel characters and ideas, and completely misunderstanding Captain America, Alex Ross found a way to get a replacement Galactus.

I’m pretty sure that Earth X is out of continuity, in which case, I’m fine with it. It’s a fun look at an alternate reality.

If, on the other hand, Marvel is now saying that it’s in continuity, I share your sentiments.

Besides: in Paradise X, they revealed that Wolverine is really

a wolverine who turned into a human. You can’t reconcile that with the dreadful “Origin” story they just extruded. Or much of anything else, really.

Fenris

Just re-read my last post and, geez, I apologize for all the typos!

I don’t think that Marvel has stated that Earth X is ever going to be continuity. I don’t see how it COULD be, actually. However, Earth X was the first place I ever read about Galactus becoming a star, Fenris. You mentioned earlier that that actually happened in continuity somewhere?

Wait, Doc… That’s all mostly used canon from the books. 70s or so. There was going to be a Celestial that hatched from Earth, but… I don’t know what happened, I’m missing that era. I kept finding references to it in my OHOTMU, but never found out exactly what happened.

Ahem. Who mentioned that Galactus was a star?

That happened in the Galactus the Devourer miniseries, and Ross & Kreuger just used it along with all the other elements from 40 years of Marvel history that they melded into the Earth X series.

–Cliffy

That’s why they send Northstar in to deal with the White Queen.

What is the maximum height that Spidey can fall from (as in freefall, no webs) onto concrete without injury?

Sorry, and thanks. I was too lazy to look thru 6 pages of posts. Wow, 6 pages…never knew there was this much call for a comics thread. I feel so at home

I think he’s currently dead. Or just got better from being dead.

However, he did become a giant, disembodied brain after getting cosmic indigestion from eating the Impossible Man’s homeworld of “Poppup”. Oh those wackey '70s.
Changing the subject,
I’ve got a question for all of you: I’m stumped. I swear there was a Marvel book called “Conspiracies” or some such. It came out somewhere around the time “Marvels” did and the upshot is that every superhero creating accident in Marvel was the result of some sort of horrific experiment. I believe it was black and white, certainly out of continuity and maybe a three issue mini.

Anyone remember it or the title?

Fenris

Somebody else mentioned this and I meant to explain and update-No Spoilers-
Long ago, before the first ape walked on land, great and hideous demons ruled the world. They were forced out of this dimension by various ancient gods. One demon, Cthon, left behind a powerful book of spells so that his followers could bring about his return(Presumably, Cthon was a Lovecraft fan). This book came to be called the Darkhold, or The Book Of Sin.

In the middle ages a cleric named Montessi somehow became immune to the Darkhold. He guarded the book. In addition, he created the Montesi Formula and bound it into the book. This spell was capable of destroying all vampires in this plane of existence. Later a scholar named Modred found the Darkhold. He was attempting to destroy Cthon, and actually succeeding, when his wife entered the room. In order to save her, Modred sacrificed his soul to Cthon. Modred ended up sleeping for a few centuries.

In the late '70s or so, the Darkhold and Modred popped up again. Modred attempted to bring Cthon back to this plane. He fought the Avengers. The Scarlet witch was briefly possessed by Cthon. Doctor Strange took possession of the Darkhold and found the Montessi Formula. He used it to rid the world of all vampires.

In the 90’s, Marvel revamped many of the horror comics of the 60’s. Something undid the Montesi Formula and vampires are back to their usual numbers. In addition, a strange dwarf(in the medical sense rather than the mythological. He lacked growth in the long bones.) was delivering Darkhold pages to people. While it took years of study to understand and use the Darkhold, these pages could be used by anyone. Simply looking at the page gives one knowledge of the summoning spell “Emmorath! Enamorath! Baal Set Elianath!”. This summons a green, shapeshifting entity which calls itself Other. The Other gives a brief description of what power the page offers, leaving out most of the details. If the person who summoned it accepts, they gain the page’s power in exchange for their soul. Victoria Montessi, a descendant of the ancient monk(who obtained papal dispensation to marry), has a vision whenver a page is used. Sam Buchanan is an Interpol agent who doesn’t believe in magic but has seen proof of a global cult dedicated to the Darkold. Louise (I can’t remember her last name) is a college professor and expert in mythology and the occult. They travel the world rounding up pages.

As whoever it was mentioned, they were plenty of guest stars. Modred returned. He's somewhat unbalanced by all he's been through, but he's generally an ally. Membership in the group changed. Various Big Bads began to rear their heads. A shocking revelation was made. Then, the series was cancelled. Some of the plotlines were continued in Doctor Strange.

Now The Full Version
Louise is killed. Her nephew, Jinx, replaces her. He was born with mystical abilities but their nature and potential is unclear. It turns out Victoria’s father is sterile. Thinking that as a Montessi he was immune to Darkhold’s corrupting nature, he used one of its spells to conceive Victoria and keep the Montessi family from extinction. This was a Big Mistake. Victoria recieves visions when a page is used because she is the dimensional gateway through which the pages recieve their power. Her existence is what makes the pages powerful enough for an average shmoe to use. Further, she discovers that she’s pregnant with Cthon. In 9 months, she’ll give birth to him and he’ll rule the world again. Doctor Strange agrees to help. He places her in temporal stasis. However, the spell fails to stop time and only greatly delays the end of the world. This is roughly Doctor Strange 65-70 or so, the same time as Strangers Among Us and the other arcs about Doc’s 2 clones-Dr Stevens and Strange. Sadly, I don’t know what happened to Victoria or any of the others past this point.

BTW-What happened to Morbius? For awhile his Midnight Sons revamp was excellent. “If I must drink blood, let it be the blood of the guilty. I will prey upon those who deserve to die.” No Anne Rice/Doctor Smith tragically hip vampire whining. Dark action and very dark humor. Then, they change his appearance and he looks like some evil-leather-fetishist elf. Then, the change him from dark predator who kills criminals to whiney Anne Rice/Doctor Smith “Oh, the pain! The pain of it all!” tragically hip vampire. IIRC, I cancelled my subscription at the same time the comic was cancelled. So, what’s the Living Vampire up to these days?

Well, I haven’t read the title myself, but I came across mention of it recently on the web.

“Conspiracy” was a two issue limited series thet came out in 1998. Written by, get this, Dan Abnett.

http://www.wonderlandstrips.nl/enter.html?target=Limited_SeriesCccCONSPIRACY.html

Yep, “Conspiracies” was a great mini. So very underrated. It was released really low kwy though so hardly anyone knows about it. Kinda fishy I’d say. Basically SHIELD was responsible for setting up the events that led to each hero’s creation. The last page led me to believe that there was one more issue to come, but looking back I realize that, no, that was it.

Damn, I need to pull that back out and re-read it. That one deserves a bookshelf format.

I just thought of a question that has been bothering me. Byrne’s Generations books are apparently set in the same Elseworld where he wrote a crossover between several Marvel and DC characters. What was the name of the original crossover? I could swear I have read it, but I can’t find it in my back issues.

Lok

Batman and Captain America, IIRC, Lok
