To enlighten any skeptics, can you describe some instances in which you or those close to you were called wetback?
Which country is in your opinion worst?
May I ask why? (I don’t see this coming up in threads about the infamous n-word, for example.) Does Bricker or any other Latino on the Board really need to provide examples just for Clothahump?
You’re right – my question might have overstepped decency. Bricker, if you’re not comfortable with this, then I’ll gladly retract my request and apologize.
Nobody has said that it’s not derogatory. I sure haven’t. The issue earlier was whether it was racist. It isn’t.
So what do you consider hispanics then, if not a race?
Going to copy an AHunter3 post here, even tho it was made in that now-closed Shodan ATMB thread (so hope AH doesn’t mind):
I appreciate his attempt here, but I must conclude that he is being more than a bit naive’.
I, too, would like to think that all Dopers can and do post in good faith. But the small subset discussed above is part of a larger group of conservatives, and it would be a mistake to think that they speak for all conservatives. Quite a few here have in fact publicly (and often greatly) distanced themselves from Trump, the current GOP, and all that they stand for. Many have simply
thrown their hands up in the air and stopped discussing politics here at all; some, by comparison, may indeed appear at first glance to be rather liberal.
The small cadre that remains and self-identifies as conservative (coming right to the chase) don’t seem the least bit interested in an authentic dialogue to me. What I instead see, day by day, are constant simplistic gotchas which are intended only to rile up and infuriate. If they are truly trying to convince anyone that they are on the right side of things, then such transparently childish (and often hypocritical) tactics bely said stated/implied aim. That such tactics are not seen by everyone on the board (much less by everybody in the country/world) in such a light simply shows where the morality-nay, honor and integrity-of those who have such a blinkered perspective (both the purveyors of such views and their audience) truly lies.
Exhibit A is a thread made earlier this afternoon in IMHO by JohnT: What was the worst you expected from a Hillary Presidency? After all of the hyperbole surrounding last year’s election run, after all of the vitriol and accusations and such thrown her way (here and elsewhere), here is a chance for them to chime in and say in a sober fashion just what it was about the thought of her winning that so perturbed them that they felt that had to punch the ticket for Trump.
And not a single one has chimed in “a genuine effort to communicate in good faith” their views on said subject in 6 hours now. That’s because a thread where they must attempt to put forth reasoned, cogent views with depth and nuance, where they cannot rub the liberal’s noses in whatever, simply does not interest them in the least. It’s all a game of purely reactionary stimulus-response one-upmanship for them, and nothing else.
Do you think deporting all undocumented/illegal people from the U.S. would be a good move? If so, would this include those brought to this country as very young children?
People. There’s only one race - the human race.
So “wetbacks” is merely an affirmation of their humanity?
You really are too fucking stupid for words.
You win. I concede.
However, one more thing, do you then agree “wetback” is an ethnicst term? One that is a derogatory term (as ykuve already agreed) based on ethnicity?
By this standard there are no racial slurs. Which is incredibly stupid.
Hi there, Billfish; you still haven’t answered my question(from several days ago):
Why are conservatives so keen on policing and repressing other peoples’ sexual behavior?
I get that you overcame that temptation. And for what good it did, I suppose I appreciate that.
I am just realizing and acknowledging, for the first time, that that temptation was actually there.
If you, with all your principles and hyper rationality felt even a twinge of emotion that could have influenced you to vote for trump based on the idea that it would harm those with whom you disagree, then I take it that there are those who allow their emotions to have more control over their actions.
You articulated a reaction and emotion that I had not been able to quite get my head around. I imagine that if you were one of the many who succumbed to that emotion, you would not have even recognized, much less described that feeling. You are a rare specimen in my travels indeed, who is able to recognize and explain an influencing factor that you resisted.
This is useful. I truly don’t understand hate or hatred, or even dislike. I cannot hold a grudge, even when it is literally to save my life. I just like people, it’s how I am. Throw me in a room of strangers, and I will find a friend. Throw me in a room of enemies, and I will find some allies. I can’t imagine desiring harm, no matter how small, to befall someone because I disagree with their opinion. You say you didn’t carry through with it, but you do seem to admit to the emotion as an influence.
Understanding where you are coming from on that temptation helps me better understand those who gave in to it.
To the extent that I used the words “mostly”, or “in large part”, I didn’t. :dubious:
Though, here, I will conclude that there were, IMHO, many who were in large part motivated to vote for trump mostly out of a desire to see harm befall those with different opinions.
I dunno if you came up with this or stole it yourself, but I think I will be stealing it.
Yes.
It’s not a Gore Vidal “It is not enough that I should succeed - my opponents should fail,” thing, though. It’s simply a desire to meet smug certainty with contradiction, to say, in effect, “Perhaps next time your certitude will be leavened by prudent doubt, eh?”
Of course, it’s empty – it seldom happens. The very people that exude smug certainty do so because they never learned in the past to care when they are spectacularly wrong. One more spectacular fail doesn’t change them; they just ignore it and continue bloviating.
And the people that were more prudent and cautious about offering predictions aren’t the ones I wanted to see contradicted.
But yeah, I admit the temptation was there.
Remember, gotta keep the questions to 10 words or less for billfish678.
Too bad we can’t do pretty charts and graphs like what Trump gets. It also helps to mention billfish678’s name every so often to keep his attention, like they do for Trump.
So billfish678, when does life begin?
Sigh.
Are you really this dumb, or do you take lessons at it?
No. It’s based on action, as has already been pointed out.
If I am speaking to you and someone is behind you that you can’t see, and I tell you that I think that person is a wetback, can you derive the ethnicity of that person from the term? The simple answer is no. The answer that you might come up with will derive from your own personal biases.
