Ask the Former Restroom-Sex Afficionado (in light of the Sen. Craig scandal)

I saw graffiti like this in a men’s room in a college building. I had assumed it was either a joke, or some sort of baiting behavior. Are the people who write graffiti actually looking?

Am I the only one here who has never seen a coin-op restroom? I find it rather odd.

This is the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard. If soliciting sex in a public place were made a crime, you’d have to shut down every strip club, bar, nightclub and high school in the entire country. If the signaled party doesn’t wish to participate, then they simply don’t respond. How hard is that?

I nominate this thread for the one that has done the most this year to further the motto of the SD: “Fighting Ignorance since 1973.”

Where else would you go to get this kind of info? Not the NYTimes, WaPo. Not the Washington Sun. Probably not the WSJ.

Thx, jayjay.

The stupidest thing you’ve ever heard? You must really lead a sheltered life.

Just because my opinions do not match yours doesn’t give you cause to insult me like that, and I do not appreciate it.

I have an 8 year-old son that frequently goes to the bathroom in public places. That may color my view on the practice, but if so, it’s understandable.

I did not insult you, I insulted your post. There is a difference. And I stand by it. And so what if someone taps his foot at your kid? Does HE know what it means? I’d wager not.

But they’re not just tapping their foot. The foot tapping is just the invitation. He doesn’t go into bars and strip clubs, though, so that argument is misguided.

I didn’t expect an apology from you- I’ve been here long enough to know better.

Well, the places where the public soliciting for sex are generally known to be gay cruise spots, as jayjay has pointed out. (Thank you for answering my questions, btw!) And since he pointed out that he noticed who was older/younger, I’m sure it would be easy to avoid hitting on a minor child.

My concern isn’t that he might get hit on. I think he may be a bit too young to witness hot guy on guy action, that’s all. He’s eight years old, and I’d like to think he has the right to go into a restroom without being exposed to sexual content.

This happens in public restrooms in places other than bars and strip clubs, as has been mentioned repeatedly in this thread, though the bars and nightclubs are more common, to be sure. Even so (or, rather, especially so), you’re worrying needlessly and overreacting. In my 42 years I’ve never ONCE seen this activity firsthand. I’d say the chances of your little precious seeing it are next to nil. Making this a crime is typical nanny state thinking. We have quite enough of that, thank you.

The point is, Q.E.D., that I do have the right to my opinion about any matter, just as you do. And I have the right to state my opinion without being insulted with dramatic hyperbole.

That’s one thing that really bothers me about this board. For as much noise is made about how open-minded and tolerant we all are, it’s amazing the viciousness that can come out when someone thinks differently. Even long-time posters aren’t immune.

I think the chances of that are fairly slim. These guys aren’t trying to flash little kids.

While it’s not a non-zero chance, I’d say it isn’t worth worrying about.

You’re welcome, sam. I saw the abundant confusion and obliviousness in the other thread and realized there was a demand for this information.

You’re welcome as well, Zoggie, and anyone else with questions about this. I’m glad my misspent, wayward youth can help clear up some fog.

I’d just like to note that I’m more or less on the side of the people who think it should be or remain illegal. I can assure you that most of the folks involved in this activity are NOT looking to hook up and go somewhere else. The invitations are generally a prelude to on-the-spot action, not a simple flirtation prior to going someplace more private.

You beat me to it.

Q.E.D. seems to be equating harmless flirtation, to what’s going on here. It’s flirtation that leads to fucking and sucking right there, as long as everything goes as planned. This isn’t the champagne room, or some back alley. It’s a public place. People have the right to be in such a place without being subjected to sex acts in the next stall over. A strip club is one thing, it’s not exactly a church, nor is it a public place. Kids in high school flirt all damn day long, but aren’t known for constantly fucking in the bathroom. The apparent rarity of the act has nothing to do with whether or not it should be made illegal. I have a hard time believing that Q.E.D. is supporting public fucking, but it seems to be the case. Am I missing something here?

If a guy meets another guy in the restroom and says “Hey, let’s go have sex in private!” I have no problem with that, IMO nor should anyone else. A successful flirtation in this case results in some form of sex in a public place. How could a failed attempt at such a thing just be considered ok? If one attempts to commit a crime, they are usually prosecutable. If public bathroom sex isn’t a crime in your opinion, I’d really like to hear your reasoning behind that.

Have you ever heard the term “Tea Room” as stated in Hustlers, Beats, and Others?

My husband used a restroom with graffiti to that effect, and said he felt skeeved WRT the general feel and disrepair. I called BS but about a month later the school newspaper had a big thing on it and a lot of guys were busted. It’s in the basement of the most picturesque and iconic building on campus.

Here’s the article. When I did a search for it it came up with similar reports back to 2001.

Hey, I wish I’d gone to your high school!

But seriously, it isn’t about “soliciting sex in a public place”, it’s about soliciting “sex in a public place”.
