Ask the guy who saw Jersey Girl.

My friend got tickets to a screening of Jersey Girl last Tuesday. We were asked a few questions before they let us in (“Kevin who?”) and warned that it was a criminal offense to record it in any way. They even wanded us- odd, since they still didn’t find the digital camera in my pocket. (No, I had no intention of doing anything illegal, I just wanted to show my friend some pictures from Halloween.)

But anyway, I saw Jersey Girl, which I did like. With a few tweaks, I think it’ll be a pretty good movie. Somewhat cheesy, somewhat predictable, but not too bad. It really didn’t feel like a Kevin Smith movie, aside from some cast regulars, and a few bits of humor that were defintely influence by Smith.

So ask away, and please keep all spoilers in boxes… like so: {spoiler} major plot point {/spoiler}, but use square brackets.

It’ll be a couple of hours before I can respond, just FYI.

So. . . how painful was it getting that icepick removed from your eye?

Hey I’m just content by the fact that you say you like it. I was getting nervous after the whole Gigle debacle; but I guess one should never doubt Kevin Smith.

(Except if the movie is called Mallrats… or Dogma… erhm… hmm)

Is it true that J-lo dies at the beginning?

Also, does it have Jay and Silent Bob in it?

Diogenes the Cynic:

Not quite the beginning, but yes. I thought it dragged before she died, so hopefully they’ll trim it down a bit. And no, I didn’t see Mewes or Smith anywhere, not even as cameos, which I expected.

And hey, Dogma was good!

Troy, do I remember you from other damning with faint praise movie reviews, such as ‘Speed 2 - This ship hijack movie is certainly a train wreck of a movie!’ and 'Dogma - It’s in color!" ?

Kevin Smith wrote and directed this movie - yet it “doesn’t feel like” his movie?

I never much liked Affleck (did and do like Matt Damon). I liked Jennifer Lopez in Selena - blah to everything else she’s done. Jason Lee used to be great! So the actors can’t carry the movie? (Question 1).

You sugggest some editing tweaks can make the film work? Is the script / story / plotline good? Do we like the characters?

It would suck if Kevin Smith makes no more movies.

Are Dante and Randel in it?

It would suck if Kevin Smith made no more Kevin Smith movies. That is, if he just falls into the ol’ Hollywood system and starts making movies like Bigger Daddy and Dude, Where’s My Dialysis Machine?

Wow, I thought this thread died a while ago. Sorry for being so late to respond.

Exactly. You can definitely sense his prescence in a few spots, but otherwise it bears little resemblance to the other movies.

Lopez is a non-issue in this. Just trust me. She’s barely in it. Lee might have had a cameo, I don’t quite remember. Affleck, well, wasn’t impressive, but I wasn’t particularly distracted by it.

Yeah, I think it could use a few snips here and there to streamline it a bit. Otherwise, yeah, it’s a good, solid movie.

Tars- Nope, they aren’t.

dantheman- I hesitate to say it’s more of a mainstream movie because that definitely sounds like a bad thing, but I guess it is a bit more mainstream than one would expect from Smith.

I saw that trailer for Jersey Girl before Cold Mountain this afternoon. With Gigli bombing the way it did, they made sure that we knew that Jennifer Lopez isn’t in the movie very long.

I talked to my friend who I saw the movie with- Jason Lee did, in fact, have a cameo.

You really thought Out of Sight was “blah”? That’s too bad. I thought it was smart, funny, sexy and interesting. It’s a good movie and she’s good in it (Clooney is too). I’d urge you to give it another chance. It’s one of those movies that gets better and better with each viewing.

I’m looking forward to Jersey Girl.

Is it worse than Cop and a Half* or Life with Mikey? It really looks like that played out, kid-with-attitude comedy sprinkled with occasional cornball touching moment nonsense.
*My apologies to diehard fans of Cop and a Half.

I never saw those movies, but the little girl is Jersey Girl has actual personality- she’s not just mugging her purdy face for the camera. She’s pretty sassy, btu I didn’t think it was annoying (and trust, me, I normally do. Nothing more annoying than a kid milking his/her cuteness).

The movie is about a father and daughter dealing with the death of the mother, so there’s bound to be some tender moments, but I didn’t think they were overdone or particularly cheesy.

Kevin Smith said a while back (or maybe it was on the commentary in JSBSSB) that the 5th movie was the last one that would take place in the Jay and Silent Bob universe. Thats why Jay and Bob and company aren’t in this movie.
