The wife of conservative Missouri congressman Roy Bluntand I were waiting for the same flight at Springfield/Branson Regional Airport this morning.
We were both flying from Springfield, MO to Atlanta to make connections-- me to Detroit, her to DC to be with her hubby as he and the rest of the GOP made last-ditch efforts to kill HCR.
At one point the little kid she was with was running around and kicked my laptop case over.
Neither one of us made it out due to some bad weather somewhere. So now I’m spending another night in a Springfield hotel, and I assume she’s back at the “condo,” as I heard her refer to it on the phone to her husband.
So that was my little brush with history today. And now I’ll open it up for questions.
How did you know who it was? I’m not sure I would recognize any politician’s wife less than a first lady or a first-lady-wannabe (Cindy McCain, Tipper Gore).
Good question. I didn’t know who she was at first. She was just a well-dressed lady with a holy terror of a kid by her side. Then some guy who appeared to be a family friend/acquaintance came up to her and they started talking. He asked her if she was headed to DC, which struck me as interesting considering the big day in Congress yesterday. Then the guy said to the little kid “You’re gonna see your daddy on TV today.” So I figured this was a congressman’s family. I knew that district was Roy Blunt’s, but he’s in his 60s, so I didn’t think this young family could possibly be his. But I quickly googled him on my phone, and sure enough, it’s his second wife, and they adopted a toddler from Russia in 2006.
