Ask the Muslim Guy, Part Deux

Muslims pray five times a day (not really, but they’re supposed to). This link: http://www.solat.net/cgi-bin/world/wsolat.shtml lists prayer times for different cities.

Yes, sure.

Mosques don’t have bells - they have a person who delivers the call to prayer (which is in Arabic and sounds very melodious, almost like a song). I’ve never seen a Muslim use a watch alarm. The timings don’t have to be followed to the second.

Well, people living in the same house might remind each other but you normally wouldn’t get someone to 'phone you or anything.

One of the points about praying is that a Muslim should lead an organised life, and should incorporate God into his daily routine. There are some Muslims who only pray in Ramadan, and these are usually the ones who need to rely on alarms and reminders from friends and family members.

Thanks, pennylane.

As for the praying thing, I meant during a work day. So from 8 AM to 5 PM, the only times that they would pray during that time slot would be at sunrise and noon, right?

That time site you gave me was confusing. ooh, my head is swimming…

No, absolutely not. Fajr is the morning prayer, asha is the evening payer, Maghrib is the sunset prayer.

Or better, Today’s (November 16, 2001) Prayer Schedule
Qibla = 56 34’ E (From True North)

----------------------------------------------------------- Fajr Shurouq Dhuhr ASr Maghrib Ishaa’
Dawn Sunrise Noon Afternoon Sunset Evening
------------------------------------------------------------5:35am 6:52am 11:53am 2:33pm 4:53pm 6:10pm

The prayers are five times daily roughly along this schedule, but this is not fixed, it adjusts to the sun.

You have up until about 15 min before the next prayer to do your prayer. (Although some folks thinks stacking prayers is not good practice and blah blah blah.) The prayer can be done pretty quickly (although again some folks don’t like that).

There’s no one anwer as to what a Muslim kid would do. No more than there’s a single answer to what a Xtian kid would do. Depends on what kind of character you want him to be. Secularized? Observant Shiite? Sunni? What flavor of Sunni? Paki origin. American origin? Moroccan origin? Palestinian origin?

Before writing the story, if you intend to include some real personal detial on the Muslim kid, you’d be well-advised to study a bit of the religion and practices.

hi i have a few questions which are not related to the wtc attacks but just some things im curious about
can you please explain what gog and magog’s significance are in islam? also the antichrist’s (djaal) and is it true that the devil is locked up for the month of ramadan so whatever “wrong” a muslim does is based on their own will without the devils influence
and wrt muttah, was it ever practiced in the shia sect, is it outlawed, and if it was under what circumstances and why?

thank you again for providing some insight
