Ask the person from a small town in Southeast Kansas!

Alright, I know what has been on the minds of thousands for the past few years. What EXACTLY is it like to live in a small town in Southeast Kansas? Well fret no more! I have lived in a small town in Southeast Kansas for my whole life, and I have all the juicy inside info. So don’t be shy, ask away!

So, what’s Clark like?

So person-from-a-small-town-in-southeast-Kansas. What made you decide to start this thread? Was it the 154 other ask the__ threads?

Bryan, I know about 12 Clarks. And Tony, this thread had somewhat to do with the other Ask The threads…but I know everyone loves Kansas, particularly Southeast Kansas!

What’s your take on the ever important gingham situation there?

Why is Kansas so godforsaken and empty? Do you sit around on the porch in your rocking chairs laughing at the poor saps who live in Nebraska or the out-of-staters who always seem to run short on gas about ten miles from the too widely spaced rest areas?

Dude! Do you, like, know my friend Kendra? She has brown hair…and brown eyes…I think…you’ve GOT to know her! I mean, there’s only like 10 people in Kansas, right? Right?

;).

So -person- are you aware of the growing numbers of people who are sick of these “ask the__” posts???

So, which part of south east Kansas? I used to live in Wichita, and I’ve got relatives still (I think) in Moline.

What defines the Kansas state of mind? Are you hard headed agrarian roustabouts or gentle tenders of the soil? Is Kansas still as heavily agricultural as it’s historical reputation implies? Eveyone seems to be coming from Kansas. Who is moving to Kansas. Where does the name Kansas come from? Is the corn really as high as an elephants eye? What important, little known fact should everyone know about Kansas?

[li]What is the common name for lead sulfide?[/li][li]Do you consider Wichita to be in southeast Kansas?[/li][li]Are you really all that different from “Ask the girl who lives in Missouri”?[/li][/list=1]

Some very excellent questions.

raisinbread, Southeast Kansas isn’t godforsaken and empty, unlike most of Western Kansas. I don’t know anyone who has a rocking chair on the porch, but I’ve seen quite a few couches.

I am not sick of the “Ask The” posts. I thought the first ones were fine, but I think it’s funny that people are making more “Ask The” posts just to be stupid. I particularly enjoyed “Ask the right-handed guy”.
I currently reside in Neosho County. I don’t really consider Wichita to be in the Southeast part of Kansas.

Kansas still IS quite heavy in agriculture, especually in the large rural areas between cities. Nobody is moving to Kansas. I think our overall population in shrinking, and I know for a fact that my town has lost about 1000 people in the past few years. The name Kansas comes from the Kansa Indians. Yes, the corn is pretty high. There’s a corn maze about 10 miles from me, and the corn is so high that you can’t reach the top even by fully extending your arm.

I think I am different from Ask the girl in Missouri, because I’m sure people want to know about Missouri (I mean, they have Branson!) and no one really wants to know about Kansas.

Yes, we measure distance in minutes, and we say pop instead of soda, and everyone in a pickup waves at you, and 60% of veicles here don’t have a muffler, and I like to go mudding and explore the forests. Kansas is fun!

Since you apparently don’t know, the common name for lead sulfide is galena, as in Galena KS (about as southeast Kansas as you can get). My sister lives in Pittsburg. Would you like to meet her?

I knew that, I knew that. Really, I did! I’ve been to Galena a time or two, and I’ve been to Pittsburgh many times. I’d like to meet your sister but I really don’t plan on visiting Pittsburgh any time soon, what with the holidays and all!

Pittsburgh PA. Pittsburg KS.
roadkiller, I don’t believe you are really from southeast Kansas at all.

Oh yeah, another key thing you need to know about Kansas people. We are all illiterate.

Are y’all still bleeding?

A couple of nights ago, I met a skinny, brown hair, brown eyed Kendra from Overland Park. I kid you not. Is that her?

'Round here, they say the difference is that folks from Kansas are hicks, while the folks from Missouri are rednecks.

Could have fooled me. I wouldn’t have a job if nobody was moving here. Johnson County added around 120,000 new residents in the 1990s, and last week I got handed several new plats with a cumulative number of about 200 residential building lots.

Nobody moving to southeast Kansas? Don’t worry … in due time, your small town will be annexed to Overland Park, Lenexa or Olathe. :stuck_out_tongue:

Ain’t that the truth!

Anyway, just wanted to say that this thread rocks! Welcome to the SDMB, roadkiller - even though I’m about 402 posts too late.

So are you a KU or K-State fan? Being originally from Shawnee, I’ve always been partial to KU (though I bleed blue and gold - Go Irish!). But here in Indianapolis, I go to grad school with a K-State alum. They’re friggin’ obsessed! And there’s a huge alumni network - about 25 consistently show up for football game watches.
