Aslan needs your help with a computer problem.

I’m putting this in MPSIMS because, well, I’m not sure WHERE this goes.

Anyway, Aslan of Narnia has some computer problems – so much so that he can’t get to the board 'cause he can’t get a browser happening.

He’s asking for your help. If any of you would like to give one of our Dopers a hand here, please drop him an email at sc_rush1@hotmail.com.

Thanks.

your humble TubaDiva

Oh, man!.. The Lion calls out in the wilderness, I can’t help. I don’t know how to fix a grouser. I’m just grateful when they work reasonably well. I hope the Furry Guy hasn’t fallen prey to the dreaded MSBastard virus. Bon chance, Aslan!

Gonna a need a lot more info before I can provide any advice.

Is the OS working normally, otherwise?
Does he still have a live internet connection?
Has he installed any software recently?
What’s he running for anti-virus?
Does it give an error or simply not load?

Trigonal, I just e-mailed him your Qs. When he replies to it, I’ll post his response here.

If he can’t get his browser happening how can he get email?

My Outlook Express picks up Hotmail. He must have his set that way, too.

Zebra, you don’t need a web browser to get email.

LOOK OUT FOR THE WHITE WITCH!!!

I’ve seen Aslan of Narnia around the G’Dope board this morning (around an hour ago), so I guess things must have worked out regarding his browser problems.

It’s a dialer program that’s holding him up. One of those kind that attacks when you’re surfing through links, disconnecting you and redialing to it’s server.

He said he’s deleted it and it comes back on anyways.

Trigonal, I forwarded you the e-mail he sent me.

Anyone else that can and wants to help, feel free to contact Aslan directly. I like the kid, but I can’t debug my own system, much less remotely walk someone thru a fix.

With the proliferation of the MsBlast worm, and with just that one symptom you described, (trouble accessing the internet) I would hazard a guess and say his machine is infected with this worm.

A quick check of Windows taskmanager will tell you for sure…just look under the process tab for “MsBlast.exe”. If it’s there is machine is infected.

There is a fix at Symantec’s Website that fits on a floppy disk. He’ll have to get someone that still has internet access to download it.

I just got back from my Karate dojo- where I was cleaning the computer there that belongs to my Sensei…it had the MsBlast worm.

He just got on AIM and I showed him how to use the My Computer icon as a web browser. Discovered that by accident a few years ago. So problem solved, I think, pending his post to that effect:)

Looks like Aslan is still having problems. Just got this email from him:

Have we established that Aslan has run a current virus scan as well as both AdAware and SpyBot? The fact that he keeps removing something from his system would seem to indicate with a virus or some sort of Spyware.

If he can’t stay connected long enough to download AdAware and/or SpyBot, can someone transfer it to him via IM?

I’m also guessing spyware-style dialer. I’ll see if I can IM him a copy of AdAware after I get home from work and dinner.

Though I’m laying odds that someone would’ve beat me to it by then.

Hiya guys.

Thanks for all the people who posted to this thread and emailed me.

I got Adaware and Spybot to run, and for the most part everything is fine. Except the browser is STILL operating at a much slower rate and my typing this out is odd, their is a delay between the letters and the line that comes after you type anything out(also slower than it usually is). Anybody got any ideas about it?

Also, I find it ironic(;)) that someone named Jadis* offered to help me out.
*Jadis is the villian in the book my name is based off of(the lion the witch and the wardrobe.) Or at least I think it is, and my mind is hazy right now.

Try doing a repair on the browser itself? (control panel->add/remove programs->IE->Repair)

Aslan…have you tried doing an uninstall of your browser in the Add/Remove section of the Control Panel? I had to do this the other day to correct a problem with my browser suddenly refusing to go to certain bookmarked websites. Windows won’t actually completely uninstall your browser, it will just revert it to the previous version (probably 5.0) and then you can re-upgrade to the 6.0 service pack by going to the Microsoft website.

And as for me trying to help…well, I figured you were over that whole Stone Table thing. Bygones!

Jadis,
Nothing under add/remove programs for IE, except for “Advanced IE Password recoverer”. I’m guessing that isn’t it, but I may be wrong.

Any ideas(could I perhaps delete it, use my computer as a browser and then re-download IE?)
