Assholes on abcnews.com

I’m pitting John Marranca Jr. of Buffalo NY and Andy Bliss of Los Angeles, CA for their rampant stupidity in commentary on this ABC News article. I mean, come on. If you really want to think about it this vitrol is meant for a lot of people, and not necessairly “selfish, spoiled yuppies.”

I won’t go into pro or anti-SUV arguements (as they are laid out fairly well in the article.) I simply hope that these two assholes are stupid. Stupidity can be excused. No, stupidity isn’t the word I’m looking for. Ignorance fits better. Ignorance can be erased, and the ignorant can be educated. If they are not ignorant, if they are well meaning and intelligent folks, then I fear for our future as they are symptomatic of the whiny, crybaby attitude that seems to be spreading like a plague amongst Americans and adults in the Western world. Perhaps being sideswiped by a Tahoe or Suburban is just what the doctor ordered.

(PS: Just FYI, I drive a '02 Chevy Prizim LSi, and get 38 to the gallon. These folks still wish I get my pocket book hurt, even though we drive similar vehicles.)

Well, yes. Some people are shrill assholes.

But I hope you get your pocketbook hurt, too.

It’s not personal, honestly. I want every American’s pocketbook hurt, including my own. Only then will we see some real conservation of fossil fuels, and only then will we see a new generation of efficiency.

No, we’ll see a new generation of bloody, endless conflicts in every region with easily-accessable oil.

But I’m an optimist. We could see the end of our world, if we decide a nuclear-equipped country is oil-rich.

I think/hope you’re mistaken, Derleth. The only place in the world (as I understand it) that oil and oil products are as cheap as they are in the U.S. is in the oil-producing nations themselves. Europe pays 3-4 times as much as we do, and we haven’t seen any armed invasions coming from there in recent years.

You can not run a very long term high-energy use economy on an exhaustible (forgive the pun) fuel, not to mention the ecological impact it has. I’m with andros here; something has got to get America to wake up to the fact that what we have now isn’t sustainable. People are funny - they’ll pay $30000 or more for a big car, and then may balk at paying $3/gallon. That’s what happened (at a lower scale) in the 70s - hence Honda, Toyota, Nissan, et al. I won’t be happy about paying huge amounts for gas myself, but if that’s what it takes to make this nation take alternative energy sources seriously, I’ll suck it up.

War. War never changes.
