What an iconic song…
tbh, i was surprised she was still with us. Aged 83.
She had never recorded anything before - they only asked her to sing because nobody else in the studio knew English. Amazing.
And on such amazing contingencies and luck do entire careers hang.
She was darn good in a lot of music.
She’ll ever remain tall and tan and young and lovely
I tried to post Amy Farrah Fowler’s version but I guess we can’t post videos now?
Oh, man. If ever a person could be in love with someone solely because of her voice, that was me the first time I heard the Getz/Gilberto album. The perfect blend of her intonation and Getz’s horn was totally seductive. That she took up with that gormless wienie didn’t lessen her appeal at all. Her first husband, Joao Gilberto, was no slacker in the vocals, either.
Love that 3 am voice on “Corcovado”. I like the Getz au Go Go album, too.

Amy Fowler sings “Girl From Ipanema”
ETA: that’s different. The last time I added the /, it put the video in the post.
Thanks, running_coach!
The Veloso Bar is still there at Ipanema beach. I stopped by while in Rio but Astrid wasn’t there that day. According to Wikipedia The Girl from Ipanema is believed to be the second most recorded pop song in history, after “Yesterday” by The Beatles. That is an incredible statistic.
Her singing always serviced the song. I can just imagine an All Star tribute concert, with more recent stars doing her songs with all their vocal gymnastics- it would be awful.
The actual Girl from Ipanema, Helô Pinheiro, is still alive.
A salute to the songwriters Antônio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes, too.
You have to wonder what the reaction would be today if they wrote such an ode to a 17-year-old. Would it become iconic? Would lyricist Moraes, over 50 at the time, be canceled? So much has changed.
Oh… sad to hear that… I love Brazilian samba/bossa nova music. I have all of Jobim’s albums (back when they were LPs).
Here’s an interesting study of the song itself from Adam Neely’s YouTube channel:
That album is in my top 10 jazz albums of all time.
And as you say, Getz’s sound is absolutely incredible. Pure sensuality. My favourite solo on that album is on O Grande Amor. The way he ends it by repeating the same notes, but gradually moving from crying anguish to quiet resignation is amazing.
As for Astrud, I wouldn’t say that she was a strong singer technically, but her soft, understated, slightly hesitant approach is exactly what bossa nova needs.
Please God - NO !
I mentioned this to a few people. Each one went “aw”, when told about the passing.
There are reasons it is a much loved classic.
I bet Genevieve Artadi could do it.
I’m never sure if it was because she was untrained, or if it was natural genius despite being untrained – probably both – but she had a phoning-it-in quality that perfectly conveyed the exact sort of nonchalance called for by the bossanova. It is the very essence of could-not-care-lessness. A pop star couldn’t have done it. Thanks, Astrud, and rest in peace.
Bad Doctor! Go to your room!
Sergio Mendes Tour 2023 is appeaing nearby me in Western NYS later this month! I don’t know who involved with the band now.
Such a unique sound.
No. I give my heart gladly.
