Grandkids who were watching our house while gramma and I were off on a loooong vacation had bought some and they were left in the pantry. I stared at them for a few days, it’s been decades since I’ve had one. Since the going-out-of-business and resurrection happened recently - thought I’d try one. One couldn’t hurt, right?
Review: "First bite revealed a foam like texture that did tear after some compression. It felt like a sponge cake that never completely rose on baking; sort of dense. The center goo was surprisingly low in viscosity - it flowed more than I expected, washing over my tongue and into the cavities between my teeth. Sweetness. Too much for my older tastes. And the sweetness clung to my mouth - not as bad as smooth peanut butter, but I had to wash the residue down with copious amounts of water. The Twinkie gets a single star.
Not reviewed: The nutrition panel. (Probably due to fear.)
Ding Dongs are much better. Try to talk some sense into the grandkids.
Side note: I always mix up Ho Hos and Ding Dongs so I did a quick image search to remind me of which I prefer, only I misremembered the name as “King Dong”. The images returned by King Dong vs. Ding Dong are wildly different.
Ever since the resurrection, I have been disappointed in Bimbo’s output. Ho Hos are OK, but cost way too much. Very disappointed in SuzyQs and Cupcakes, too much sawdust in the mix. Little Debbie is doing a better job for less.
I have not had a Twinkie in well over a decade, maybe 15 years or more.
I just don’t think they were that great.
I also had a Big Mac today for the first time in probably 5-7 years. It was OK, but I’m disappointed. I prefer Wendy’s burgers. I just wanted to try one.
Yep, this. Pre-bankruptcy Twinkies were much better. Same with the fruit pies and Ding Dongs. Vanilla Zingers are okay, but good luck finding them anywhere.
I was in a conversation a few months ago where somebody mentioned that King Dongs were an actual alternate name for Ding Dongs (and nothing to do with penises).
I was shocked when I bought some Hostess Twinkies, cupcakes, and Ding-Dongs a few years ago. They’d shrunk by about 30% from the ones I remember eating when I was a kid.
I haven’t been able to find Hostess Snowballs (cream-filled chocolate cake covered in marshmallow and coconut) anywhere. Do they still make them?
