Attending the World Cup in person

My wife and I are talking about going to Brazil in 2014, partly just for tourism/travel, but hopefully to attend some World Cup games.

How does one go about getting World Cup tickets? Assume we want to see one or more games with the USA playing (assuming the USA qualifies), and ideally one or more with Australia playing (she’s Australian). Do tickets all sell out in some insane rush on some random day? Are there packages one can get that include all the USA opening round games, plus travel between the cities, etc? Anyone recommend any such things?
thanks!

A relatively small part of the tickets are given to the football associations of the countries that are playing in the game (usually less than 10000). Depending on the country (and the country hosting the tournament) it might be possible to get these tickets. If you’re from Albania and the tournament is in Brazil, your chances are better than if you’re English and the tournament is in France.

Then there is a part of the tickets that is sold to the inhabitants of the host nation and I guess there are some ‘general’ sales as well.
