Attention Hetero's: Please take back America

Yes, I’m talking to the breeders here, please take over the media again. After a long day in class, I come home and either turn on the TV, the Internet, or read a magazine, sometimes all 3 at once, to relax and unwind. I am definately a mass devourer of information and I am quite perturbed by the over-abundance of gay-related stories everywhere I look. Let’s see here

Straight-Dope: always 2-3 active topics about gayness. Like this one. Honestly, what hasn’t been covered so far? Gay Marriage? Nature/Nurture? It is so tiring.

TV: Oh boy… Will and Grace again. Lets see… Jack and Will are still gay… that’s just super. What’s next? Oh… its Queer eye for the Straight Guy… that’s fantastic… like I dont know what a flaming queen looks like already… next? Hooray! A new season of crank yankers! Oh yes… Jimmy Kimmel feels anything having to do with gayness is the zenith of hilarity… but don’t worry an all-gay comedy team is coming up next!! Anyone else notice how SNL is absolutely the gayest show on television? Not even because Karen and Clay Aiken were hosting, it seems every skit is about homocil or queerness or what have you. click

Magazines: I’m beginning to hate Time Magazine anyways since its like a watered-down CNN only stuff I’ve read online already. But this week it seems like 1/3rd of the content is about gayness. Gay marriage, gay editorials, gay legislature. IT’s driving me insane. I don’t care about gayness anymore!! I’ve had my whole life to get used to it! It’s old! It’s passe! It’s uninteresting!! Please find something else to talk about!!!
Media was much more bearable when hettie’s were in charge. Please take it over again.

::::::grabbing lawnchair :::::::::::::
Waiting for the flame war to start.

Okay, I’ll see what I can do.

BTW, this thread was an absolutely super idea, and I almost guarantee you’ll get universal accolades from the rest of the SDMB. Pats on the back all around, no doubt. There’s no way at all it will devolve into indignant retorts, accusations of homophobia, and so forth. No sirree.

Hey, it’s just a “trend”, Brandus, don’t you recognize a “trend” when you see one? Previous “trends” brought us reality TV, Beanie babies, body piercing, Ricky Martin, and Martha Stewart.

This too shall pass.

Jessica Simpson will be gone soon, too, if that helps.

i predict that sometime in the next 24 hours the OP is going to claim grumpily, “Hey, it was a joke…”

BWAHAHAHAHA! Oh my sides!

:: pauses ::

Right, back. Sorry about that. It’s just that your OP is so completely preposterous. However, let us give it the gravity it is due:

Out of how many active threads total? Dude, if you think 2-3 is a bit much, try looking for current threads on religion, politics, people being stupid, etc. Shit, back when december was still posting here, you’d have 2-3 active december threads going. AT LEAST.

::counts:: So a basic cable show, an HBO show, Crank Yankers and another basic cable (but also on Comedy Central IIRC) show. That’s … 4, out of all the content on television. Let’s be considerate and say that there are 200 current television shows, including cable, in America. And that’s not even including movies. So that’s 2-3 active topics dealing with homosexuality (your estimate) out of 25 threads for BBQ Pit, MPSIMS, IMHO, CS, GD and GQ, giving us 2-3 out of 175. I’d place that 2-3 higher, but we’re going on your numbers here. So adding the 175 and the 200, that gives us 7 shows or threads dealing with homosexuality out of 375. That’s slightly under 2%. But we press on.

So that’s 1/3 of one magazine for one week.

Dude, your statistical average, which was already in the toilet, just took a plunge into the Earth’s mantle. You have GOT to do better than this. And this is a magazine you already don’t like. It’s not like someone went and branded your Happy Fuzzy Bunny “Gay Rights!” and forced you to look at it 24/7.

Lastly:

Oh, honey, the hetties were never in. The ones in charge just weren’t out. :: pat pat :: I know, I know, it’s a difficult thing to grasp, but let me help you:

It’s a current issue. It’s going to be for at least the next year or so because it’s a national election year. It started with Massachusetts, it picked up steam with GWB’s SotU address, and you can bet that Kerry, Dean et al., as well as GWB and other figures, will be adding fuel to this fire in an attempt to garner a larger voterbase until election time comes around. My crystal ball can’t see any further. It needs more examples of gay-themed items in the media.

I feel compelled to add, Brandus, that in your zeal to post this gripping examination of the saturation of American newsmedia by homosexuality, you failed to mention these outlets:

newspapers
radio
internet (the sdmb, much though I wish it were, is not exactly representative of the online community as a whole)

And, of course, advertising as a whole.

ergle : I didnt come across as queeny as I meant to, I was asking the big burly men and big breasted’ed women here to take back the media for THEIR sake, I am definately not a ‘breeder’. I’m sick of the media for the same reasons that if I was Black, I wouldnt want to watch BET all the time. So this is an open invitation to rid the channels of the Fab 5, gay marriage polls, and Clay Aiken. On behalf of my kind, we won’t miss them.

I read the OP and didn’t think I would see anything even more idiotic. Then I came across this stupid ass lawn chair shit. For fuck’s sake, either add something to the conversation or leave the hamsters be. There’s a reason “lawn chair” posts are against the rules.

As for the OP, I long for the day when one’s sexuality doesn’t matter anymore. Yeah, there are gay characters and gay people on TV. Just like in real life. I’m personally not interested to going back to the days when homosexuals had to hide who they were and feel shame. If it takes a little more in your face and over the top characters to do that, well then that’s what it’s going to take.

Here’s the main thing though, the media, be it TV or magazines, are interested in one thing only. That is selling more of their product. In order to do that, they need to give their demographic what they want to see. Considering the popularity of Will and Grace (which, incidentally, is a crappy show IMO) and Queer Eye, I’d say that you’re in for a lot of years of disappointment.

Haj

Hot damn! If I didn’t already have a sig I liked, I’d beg the right to use this.

You might as well put away the lawn chair, Shirley. I doubt anyone will take this thread seriously enough to work up even a flicker.

Oh, and Brandus – what the heck are “big breasted’ed women”? Do they have rows of teats, like a bitch?

Yes, I’m talking to the forced-adopters here, please take over the media again. After a long day in class, I come home and either turn on the TV, the Internet, or read a magazine, sometimes all 3 at once, to relax and unwind. I am definately a mass devourer of information and I am quite perturbed by the over-abundance of hetero-related stories everywhere I look. Let’s see here

Straight-Dope: always 5-7 active topics about straight relationships/dating/flirting. Like this one. Honestly, what hasn’t been covered so far? Age difference? Older mothers? It is so tiring.

TV: Oh boy… Friends again. Lets see… Seinfeld and Elaine, making out on the kitchen table… that’s just super. What’s next? Oh… its My Big Fat Obnixous Fiance… that’s fantastic… like I dont know what a one of THOSE looks already… next? Hooray! A new season of Everyone Loves Raymond! Oh yes…Seinfeld feels anything having to do with straightness is the zenith of hilarity… but don’t worry an all-straight comedy team is coming up next!! Anyone else notice how Good Morning America is absolutely the straightest show on television? Not even because of the hosters, it seems every skit is about stalkers or rapists or what have you. click

Magazines: I’m beginning to hate Time Magazine anyways since its like a watered-down CNN only stuff I’ve read online already. But this week it seems like 2/3rd of the content is about straightness. Adulterers, split up homes, Defense of Fathers Acts. IT’s driving me insane. I don’t care about straight people anymore!! I’ve had my whole life to get used to it! It’s old! It’s passe! It’s uninteresting!! Please find something else to talk about!!!
Media was much more bearable when homo’s were in charge. Please take it over again.

[/end sarcasm]

There, do you see how stupid that looks, because YOU happen to be a hetro? How do you think gays feel about hearing about you guys 2000x as much?

Have a nice day, though.

/Shadez

What a gay OP.

Feel free. IIRC sigs can be up to two lines long:) [sub]Alright, I admit it … I just wanna be in someone’s sig…[/sub]

Psst … Shadez, I believe Brandus has already stated that 'e ain’t hetro:

And this thread (though perhaps the sorta-late US hour is the reason) has to have the highest post-view ratio of any I’ve seen in quite some time. Either that or the view counter is broken.

Whoops, I just screwed our chances for 100% ratio.

My bad.

Can’t have a 100% ratio, as each thread starts out with 0 replies and 1 view. It’s up to 12 replies and 133 views now, so I think the server just went a bit wonky.

Clay Aiken is gay now? Since when?

Hey, I suppose it could be taken as a sign of progress if one’s status has morphed from “ICK! EVIL!!!” to “(yawn) What, you again?”

And 'punha, thanks for the sig.

The anus is the new “in” orifice!

I think it won’t matter anymore when people, gay and straight, stop making an issue out of it. And I believe that is what the OP was trying to get at. Personally, there is not a shred of doubt in my mind there are queers who LOVE to make a show of their gayness, for whatever reason I cannot fathom. I’ve witnessed it firsthand, and I can honestly say these people are not doing themselves or the higher social goals of the gay rights movement any favors.

A thought just ocurred to me: Will & Grace is a show for straight people, and so are most shows featuring gays. How else to explain the over-the-top “gayness” of so many of the characters on these showss? IRL, few gay people are flamers, but it is absolutely impossible to find a show with gay characters that doesn’t trot out some swishy or slutty gay person for comic relief. “Ellen” was one of the few shows that shied away from this trend, and treated homosexuality half-seriously (within the confines of a sitcom, anyway). I think it’s no coincidence that show got canned.

It’s often because “making a show of our gayness” is usually code for “finding it interesting in some way and occasionally talking about it, and behaving as though we had gasp a community and a culture.”

Or else it’s code for “visibly outside the bounds of socially-approved behaviour, dress, and speech for our gender, which makes others uncomfortable.”

Or else it’s code for “pig-headedly insisting on having our consensual sexual, social, and gender choices being treated as equally worthy of celebration as those of others, in every picky detail.”

Or else for “refusing to be quiet like a good’un when it’s perfectly obvious that our discussion of the roots of our oppression and identity are making polite people uncomfortable.”

Yes, how rude.

Please read the rules of the Pit.
