ATTN: SETI@home Straight Dopers

That includes WUs brought in by new members. Our real output is around 200 WUs per day. But that’s still faster than many groups around us, so we can still gain a lot of places.

That would be nice, but at the moment it doesn’t look likely. You are the second fastest member of the group, and the fastest, Demo, is already ahead of you. You can compare the speeds of the individual members here:

http://www.setiatwork.com/cgi-bin/wkystat.pl?group=The+Straight+Dopers

Actually I was thinking more along the lines of new members joining who already have more than 2800 WU’s which would bump me back to 20th place. Eight more members joining with 2800 WU’s or more would really give us a nice push towards the top of the overall table. Mind you that is not to say that new members just starting aren’t also welcome. The more the merrier.

Wow, I just checked and I went up quite a bit! #58.

I went and posted on another board to remind some of our members there.

The transition to BOINC has begun!  Download the new software here!

Make sure that you don’t sign up for a new account, but convert your old one. You will still be able to use classic seti@home for a while if you want, but it is going to be shut down soon.

Hmmm, it’s not allowing me to download work units. Curses!

Did you look at some of the top teams? After 2 days of the client released they’re already kicking ass. WTF? Did you get an email telling you the BOINC client was out or did you just happen to go to the website and see it? They said they’d email people when the client came out.

Grrrr…

I didn’t get an email either, I found out about it when I checked the website for news.

The top team has 2571 credits. That’s not that many, considering that one work unit is worth about 25 credits. But they probably have a lot more already, the statistcs aren’t updated that often. I think they have only updated once so far.

It looks like BOINC is still at “gamma” testing stage - or what we call user acceptance testing - it’s gone beyond beta test, but hasn’t been fully released as a live production system. In this case, it’s a “may as well get it now, as long as you’re thinking about it.”

Trouble is - I’m thinking about it. I’ve downloaded the software, and am trying to activate the account. I got as far as “we recognize the email address, so we’ll send you the activation code” stage, but no email yet. At the moment, I get a “down for maintenance” message.

It took awhile for my activation email to come–like a couple of hours. Then I wanted to change my email to another account, and the confirmation for that never came, so I tried again and that time it was immediate.

I’m also getting lots of “no work available” messages, but apparently they’re working on that. I’m prepared to be patient, and I’ve got the kids computer still running the old version–I won’t change that one over until BOINC is up and running smoothly.

They had some sort of bottleneck, and they uncorked it, as all of a sudden, something like eight of the accound confrmation emails poured into my mailbox.

Got the BOINC client up and running, but now the trouble is in getting some work units to chew on. Now the client is showing a string of “Message from server: No work available” and “Deferring communication with project for 2 hours ten minutes…”

If you follow the news here: http://setiweb.ssl.berkeley.edu/ you’ll see they’re still working on getting caught up on splitting the work units and debugging the system. Personally I still have the old SETI crunching away waiting for more BOINC WUs to roll on in.

The truth comes out… “the new fast-CGI scheduler decided to choke on something that it hadn’t choked on in Alpha”

I did get three BOINC units today, so for a couple hours, my machine was cranking along at 100% CPU utilization as the old S@H client’s been getting its units just fine, so it was running on one proc, and BOINC was keeping the other busy.

I’m happy to say that the box stayed cool and quiet as ever under the strain.

I upgraded to the BOINC client, but haven’t gotten any work units yet. The old Seti is still up and running though.

Has anyone checked their names to see if they crunched a possible hit?

CUZ MY NAME’S UP THERE!

OK, I didn’t actually DO anything, but I’m perversely pleased none the less. Anyone else have a hit?

I noticed that my command-line client hasn’t been connecting and I checked the newsgroups… SETI’s having server problems. I’m not sure if this is affecting the standard SETI screensaver type program as well, but I wouldn’t be surprised.

I’m getting a “Fatal Error” message. Is that related to the servers being down, or should I delete and reinstall the program?

And what is BOINC?

Here’s some information on the transition from the SETI classic client to the BOINC client.

It’s probably related to the server problems. I’ve been getting some weird error messages, too.

After joining “SETI classic” back in April, I never have received my password e-mail (probably because of my ISP’s affiliation with spamhaus :smack: ) so I still haven’t joined the team.

So has anyone formed a BOINC team yet? Team lookup is disabled right now and I didn’t see it in the top 60 teams. Since I can access my account on BOINC, I can actually join this time.

The Straight Dopers.

Hi Demo, thanks, I sorted and downloaded everything and it seems to be running. At least I hope it is.

Okay, I’m in. Hope my 40-some credits transfer.
