I predict a Trump Pardon in January 2021.
Since the most recent life sentence is under state law, Trump has no power to pardon it.
I gladly remove my prediction
I’m predicting he’ll promise to do it anyway then blame Hillary/Obama/etc. for not letting him do it, even though he can’t do it legally.
…while simultaneously bragging that he did it anyway.
Or he’ll issue an executive order nationalizing the Criminal Justice and prison systems, and move on from there…
I guess to be fair, nothing stops him from issuing him a full pardon from all federal convictions, and he could certainly announce triumphantly that he did so.
Fields will still rot in prison for the rest of his miserable life, but Trump can rest on his laurels regardless.
Im predicting Tan the Conman will abuse the state judge and the governor in his next round of [del]Moscow working hours[/del] EST 4 a.m. twitter-rage, announcing incredulity that the state courts are not under Tan’s purview.
We were there for both the federal sentencing a while back and the state sentencing this last Monday.
Interesting to compare the two. Victim impact statements were stronger and more declarative in the federal hearing, tending toward confrontational and emotional in the state – possibly because it was the (fingers crossed) final court date. There were tears and more stress the last time around.
Federal prosecutors showed significantly more evidence to influence the sentencing, including the framed picture of Hitler and copy of Mein Kampf on Fields’ nightstand. That’s pretty over-the-top Nazi posturing. State prosecutors did a good job, though.
State venue was at a temporary location due to construction, and poorly air-conditioned. Lots of traffic noise from outside because they opened windows. It was either exasperatingly or charmingly small-town, take your pick.
Federal judge seemed much more sympathetic to the victims than the state judge (who had issued an injunction protecting the Confederate statue(s) and was rumored to have said the counter-protestors “wouldn’t have been hurt” had they stayed home). However, during some of the victim impact statements, the state judge was visibly affected, and after final recess he came out swinging, explicitly knocking down defense arguments and literally condemning Fields as strongly as possible. He even added 3 years of supervised probation, explaining that he didn’t know of any way Fields could possibly get out of prison, but on the off chance it ever happens, he wants him to be supervised. Heh.
Although we have no indication anyone will grant this, my wife asked the court that he be fed only plant-based food and given vegan clothing and accommodations for the rest of his life so that he will never kill any living thing again.
Good for her, although of course technically making and consuming plant-based substances kills living things too, including the plants themselves. More seriously, many congratulations to your wife and you for making it through this, standing up for what you believe, and coming forward to denounce and testify against Nazism and racism. Y’all are the absolute antithesis of the famed Niemöller passivity in the face of evil, and I salute you.
I keep reading that as “paint-based.”
I also.
I hate to argue here, but this comes up a lot when people are scrambling for a way to feel better about their diets. A moment’s thought demonstrates it’s false. Plant-based eating kills (substantially) fewer animals and plants* than eating animals does. So short of self-annihilation it is the kindest system currently practicable.
*You guys know science, right? The laws of thermodynamics, just for starters. There’s always a loss when energy is converted – if an animal eats plants and you eat the animal, the animal had to get more energy from the plants than you can get from the corpse, so overall more plants die than if you straight-up ate plants.
Not to mention the vast amount of grain production that is currently devoted to commercial animal feed, skewing the argument even more dramatically in favor of a plant-based diet.
I don’t see anywhere in Kimstu’s post where she was making any sort of comparison between different kind of diets.
I completely agree. I was just pointlessly nitpicking the claim that consuming only plant-based substances means that one will “never kill any living thing again”. Yes, we definitely kill fewer living things when we stick to plants-only consumption, but not zero.
