At least they didn’t recommend a 55 gallon drum.
(Yes, they sell them.)

I Wouldn’t Believe It If I Didn’t Get A Call At 5 AM from Vegas (2AM) Dept:
“Hey Mom? Dad? I’m fine. I’m safe in my room. I’m fine. But there was announced that there was an Active Shooter at Mandalay Bay where all the concerts are being held. They told everybody to go to their rooms.”
.
My son was at the Psycho Concert Series in Vegas (Heavy Metal). The venue for the concerts and all merch was all Mandalay Bay. We’d booked him a room at Luxor because it was close, but less expensive. He had just gone back to Luxor when the announcement was made at Luxor… so he went to his room there. According to him, nobody got shot/killed, but someone with at least one gun was arrested.
Now, I’ve spent all day looking for an article to confirm this. Hey, Active Shooter, Mandalay Bay, sets off some pretty big alarms, right? Nothing. No mention in any paper. No mention on any website. Its like the event never happened. The story got Killed? Looks that way.
I mean I guess I could see the justification for paying out the kind of cash it would take to kill a story that big as the casinos and hotels would lose a huge amount of business.
Still, I’m just amazed that in 2021 that it is actually possible to completely kill a story that big.
[This motel shooting] is all I can find. (Las Vegas)
There’s some “spin” going on; that’s more than a mile away from where he says it happened.
(I guess what happens in Vegas Really Does ‘stay in Vegas’… )
Is it at all possible that your son had some misinformation? I also can’t find anything about a shooting at Mandalay Bay since 2017. It seems incredibly plausible that there was a shooting and that someone automatically connected it to Mandalay Bay since that hotel is still so closely associated in the public consciousness with that mass shooting incident from years ago. If there really was another shooting there the press would be all over it, I imagine.
Kayaked a local river last weekend and had a glorious time, other than “Anchor” a name I gave to a woman who arrived at the put-in right as we were paddling off. She yelled, “Hey, wait!”, which we did. She asked for help getting her yak off her car, since this was her first time kayaking and her friend got called in to work.
I tried explaining that maybe flat water would be better for her first experience, but then had to explain what I meant. I got her boat off her car and down to the water, then I paddled off. She yelled, “hey, wait” again, as she fell right out of her boat before even getting started. I ignored her (hearing aid left in my vehicle) but my gf yelled at me to go back and help her.
Eventually she asked me if I didn’t like her, and I explained that for me kayaking is a relaxing activity, not something I wanted to teach a newbie. Then I paddled off, fast.
She drowned, you know.
Here’s the thing though: he is incredibly into the Heavy Metal scene and all of the events were at Mandalay Bay. Luxor is next to mandalay bay (I forget if there is a monorail between them; my kid said he walked it most of the time). He barely gambled, had one mixed drink in a week (“It was $20, Dad. Who spends $20 on mixed drinks?”). When he wasn’t sleeping at Luxor, he was at the Mandalay Bay venue (he had all the wrist bands paid for etc, etc). Whatever happened was pretty localized.
He said he was in Luxor when he heard the alert. He didn’t hear pops or see a gun, it was an alert over the PA telling guests to go to their rooms for safety. He told me the notification mentioned ‘active shooter’ and ‘Mandalay Bay’, so that’s pretty specific. But, he also said he ‘didn’t hear about anyone getting shot or anything’. Could someone have been shot? It’s possible… or maybe it was a nut with a gun who took it into the concert venue area.
“Active Shooter” might just mean “Nut with a gun”. He didn’t hear any discharges. If the guy was running / being chased by security the same alert Might have been sent… I suppose. And if 10 security guards tackled the gunman and he was taken away by the cops, that might not be considered a big story. What trips the big story flags to me are 1) Mandalay Bay 2) Concert venue and 3) Gunman (active shooter was the term used). Those three things alone should have made this light up AP… but it didn’t.
Also, the story above about the motel… what if that’s all of the story they told the Press?
Or it wasn’t an active shooter, just an over-anxious spectator/guard/boss who doesn’t know a gunshot from a champagne cork, and when they found out there was nothing, they had their PR guys do their jobs?
I’m finding no fan references of a shooter at Psycho Las Vegas on Twitter.
Heh, if she did I hope she understands why I suggested she start on flat water.
The other thing she likely had to deal with was her lack of shuttle. We’d left my gf’s truck at the take-out so we had a way to go back and get the car with cradles. She had been stood up by her friend and put her boat in the water without a second vehicle at the take-out. No idea what she planned to do when her journey ended.
Management paranoia? There was a shooting at a motel, so there was an announcement about “there is an active shooter incident occurring. We request that all guests of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Hotel take precautions”? Just spit-balling, obviously.
Q: Just how many champagne corks has anyone ever seen popped at a Heavy Metal concert? FTR- Those concerts are Loud. Metallica is my cite.
I understand. Look I found it odd too but my kid had no reason to lie / call us at 2AM his time. Also, he was at the Luxor and this came over the Luxor PA as a warning to Luxor guests: Active shooter at the Mandalay Bay concert venue. To be fair, there is a huge amount of “open carry mental illness” going around in this country right now so almost anything is possible.
Yay! New video card has cleared customs and will be here Thursday!
I’m getting tired of playing games on my Surface Pro.
I don’t think anyone has suggested that. Especially when it comes to something of that nature it is very easy for something to get garbled in the retelling. It’s a very emotional subject and that is very much true when it is something that is happening right at that moment in proximity. Your son may have been repeating exactly what he heard with complete accuracy but that doesn’t mean that what he heard was itself accurate.
The absence of any reporting about it afterward strongly suggests that it wasn’t accurate.
You’ve suggested that something was potentially covered up, but you’ve also said it was “announced over a PA system”, and those two things are pretty contradictory.
I was intrigued by this story, so I googled and found the motel shooting:
Man killed when gun discharges in motel room on Las Vegas Strip - Las Vegas Sun Newspaper
Which had the following information:
The shooting was reported shortly after 1 a.m. in the 3900 block of Las Vegas Boulevard South, near Hacienda Avenue, police said.
When I plug this information into Google maps, I find that the 3900 block of Las Vegas Blvd South is right behind the Luxor and that Hacienda Avenue is renamed Mandalay Bay Drive where it connects to Las Vegas Blvd South.
So, given the time and place, it is entirely possible that the PA was used to warn guests of the Luxor that there had been a shooting, and the words “Mandalay Bay” appeared in the announcement but the announcement was not a bout a shooting at the Mandalay Bay resort/hotel.
That makes total sense.
Just checking in with a status update on the battle of Wolfpup+Roundup vs. Mutant Zombie Stump.
Wolfpup+Roundup is currently champ. The stump’s zombie growths are totally withered. If they ever come back I’m ready, and will be merciless!
I may put off the stump grinding and replanting to next year, I just don’t want this fucker regrowing, sucking up all the soil nutrients, and blocking light from the other shrubbery. Honestly, without the Roundup treatment, this fucker would probably be a yard high by now, and striving mightily to once again be higher than my roofline!
Bah! Good news is I got that front tooth filled yesterday by a new dentist that I really like. Unfortunately after it was done and he cheerfully asked me how it feels, instead of bubbling over in gratitude like I should have done, I kept complaining that it didn’t “feel right”. He shaped it a bit more and double- and triple-checked it and declared it good, and I was still dubious.
I realized two things a few hours later. Thing #1: half my face was frozen, so nothing would have felt “normal”. Thing #2: I’d become used to having a front tooth with a great big whacking hole in it, so having it newly restored would naturally feel different initially.
The job is, in fact, perfect. Meanwhile this nice dentist probably thinks I’m an ungrateful idiot.
For absolutely no reason, I’ve woken up at 345am both Monday and Tuesday mornings. Decided to take melatonin last night to (hopefully) give me decent sleep.
Crawled into bed around 1030pm, closed my eyes….
cricket…cricket…cricket
Not “inability to sleep” crickets, but one really loud m’fer outside my window.
Closed the window, pulled the shade, drew the curtains. Barely muffled it.
Came out to the living room, curled up on the couch. I swear the wee bastard followed me and began singing the song of his people outside the window next to the couch.
Finally fell asleep around midnight… and woke up at 4.
