Auld Lang Sighin' (January mini-rants)

Paging @purplehorseshoe

Should @purplehorseshoe start to giggle, we might need back-up.

Jast saying…

LMAO

Do I actually hafta translate?
Cuz “korwa” means “bitch.”

ETA pronounced “koor-vah” in Murrican.
ETA 2 … that video is awesome, where’s it from @Mundane_Super_Hero ?

Continuing on with my absent-minded two-month overdue bill on my most valued premium credit card, I just got a faux-polite email from the bank indicating how happy they would be to downgrade me to a lower status help me out if I was having cash flow difficulties. Fuck you, bank, I paid you a couple of days ago. It’s not my fault if it takes you as long as it does to post the payment even though it’s already bloody obviously in your system. Fuck off.

Hey, I think I may have learned something today. I don’t speak Polish, but there may be some overlap with Ukrainian with which I have a very vague and tenuous familiarity, and I’m focused on this: “pronounced “koor-vah” in Murrican”. I seem to recall an expression that sounds like “skoorvay sin”. “Sin” definitely means “son”, and your analysis leads me to believe that “skoorvay” would be the possessive form of “bitch”.

It appears that dogs and their offspring are celebrated in many different cultures! :grinning:

True. Although in the case of this Polish video, we all know who’s really Putin’s bitch.

My understanding is that it was a military parade in Poland.

Also, thank you for your clarification!

Google Translate was translating “Putin kurwaaa” as “Fuck Putin”
( I thought that the ‘Lalalalala’ was just for the melody )

Nope. The word makes the verb reflexive. The phrase you’re thinking of means, quite literally, “go fuck yourself.”

Without the reflexive, it would be a command, to go forth, and fuck.

But the last syllable means, yanno, do it to yourself.

Since doing all that stuff made you feel better, purely in the interest of helping a Doper out, you may come over & do all of that at my place. You’re welcome!

Right? I feel okay, but I wasn’t as productive as all that!

Something that has been annoying me for the past few weeks: About half the time I go on FaceBook I only get a few posts, and sometimes none at all. Refreshing the page doesn’t help. This started after I set up FB Purity, and I’m wondering if this is somehow related. The thing is that it doesn’t happen all the time.I never had this problem all the years I’ve been on FaceBook.

I would normally bow to your linguistic superiority, but the Ukrainian word син (pronounced “sin”) definitely means “son”, so I don’t see how it can mean “go fuck yourself”.

However, I was misremembering the expression I meant. “Bitch” in Ukrainian is сука (“sooka”), and the expression I was thinking of denoting the male offspring of a pup was сучий син (“sookay sin”). However, “skoorvay sin” is also a thing, and it’s an insult that apparently means the son of something, but Google Translate hasn’t been helpful.

Whoreson.

By golly, yes, thank you! курва is “whore”, so “son of a whore”!

With a head as round as Putin’s… if his mother was a whore he probably slid right out.

This being the Dope, and I being a pedantic pup, some slight corrections in pronunciation are called for here. In case we meet a Ukrainian we don’t like, we want to get these insults right!

So for instance if the Ukrainian handyman brothers that I occasionally hire happen to overcharge me at some point, I might wish to refer to either or both of them as a сучий син (correctly pronounced "soochay sin), the male offspring of a noble bitch.

An alternative and equally endearing appellation would be курвий син (“koorvay sin” – I don’t know why I thought there was an “s” at the beginning) meaning the son of a street-walking whore.

And that is our Ukrainian language lesson for today, children. Remember, it’s always a sign of respect when you make the effort to converse with foreign people in their own language!

Due to a long story I don’t feel like telling, I am out of lithium carbonate and Qelbree.Rite Aid texted me that lithium is out of stock. Qelbree requires prior authorization and will be delayed. I am having even more trouble functioning than usual.

The local news is spending a great deal of time on the Super Bowl. I am somewhere between not caring and hostility to professional sports teams. OTTOMH I knew that the Phillies were in the World Series way back when because that was all over the local news. I did not watch a second of any game. I learned that the Phillies had won when I was awoken by very loud cheers and fireworks in the parking lot.

NOTE- I am not claiming to be somehow superior to sports fans. I am just saying that I don’t care about professional sports.I feel the funds and tax breaks given to professional sports teams are a massive waste of goverment money.

I used to feel the same way (there was a time when I lost interest in sports). But you have to remember that sports are a form of entertainment, and your criticism encompasses all forms of entertainment. So funds and tax breaks given to a film crew that wants to make a movie in your area, or government-sponsored art exhibits, they are the same “massive waste”.

Entertainment is very important for mental health, and sports in particular help foster a sense of community and pride in an area. They provide an objective benefit to people. Sports are rarely a net gain economically (despite promises otherwise, the revenue generated by a sports arena or other events generally does not outweigh the cost for a community to build and host them).

While most studies do not find large tangible economic impacts from sports facilities and events, there is some evidence that the presence of teams may have positive social benefits on host communities.

Sports are good for people. You might not enjoy them and that’s okay, just like it’s okay if you don’t enjoy ballet or stage plays or music concerts, but other people do and it’s not a waste just because you don’t want to partake.

No, it does not. Back in the 90’s, the Eagles threatened to move to another city unless the city government gave fund and tax breaks to build a new stadium. Which other forms of entertainment do that? Various experts testiftied, with charts and graphs and evidence, that the stadium would not bring in any where near the money the Eagles claimed it would. Various experts explaineed with charts and graphs and evidence that every American city that could meet the Eagles demands already had an NFL team. There was nowhere for them to go. The threat to leave was a bluff. The city gave the team the funds and tax breaks anyway.

We can argue whether or not they are a wate. I doubt the total annual amount of funds and tax breaks given to film crews compare to the amount spent on catering to our professional sports teams.

“some evidence” “may have positive social benefits” I am not convinced by these weasel words.

When did the local ballet, stage play or music concert demand we build a new stadium to accomodate them?

Are you unfamiliar with the recent saga of teh Sixers wanting the city to build them a new arena complex in China Town? For the sheer amount of money spent in the hopes that these sports teams “may have positive social benefits on host communities.” yes it is a waste.

Addendum

Last year, the Philadelphia Orchestra went on strike. They wanted health care and wages that they could actually live on in Philly. Not the same.

Sounds comparable to the Sacramento Kings (basketball) pitching a tantrum a few years ago about how they were going to leave if they didn’t get a brand-shiny-new arena in a part of downtown that already had major traffic problems. They got it, so my tax money helped subsidize a for-profit entity that doesn’t pay back anywhere near what we taxpayers spent on the spoiled brats. I’d rather have seen that money going to things like encouraging kids to stay in school or learn a skilled trade instead of aiming at “careers” in sports or entertainment that are for most a pipe dream at best.
