Auld Lang Whines (January Mini Rants)

Our organization just updated the client management software. It was time, the old stuff was like 10 years old. Apparently the software works fine with a tiny database (aka: demo). But now, for now, every little navigation click results in about a 45 second wait. And a few random waits when all you’re doing is typing a note. Oh, I know it’ll all get worked out eventually, even if it means rolling back the upgrade. But in the meantime we’re just sitting around noticing there really isn’t any increased functionality in the 10 years newer version. So why exactly did we do this?

FML. A not great day at work (computer shit), and extra long commute, and what do I come home to? One of the bloody smoke detectors or whatever it is, RIGHT OUTSIDE MY BEDROOM DOOR, is giving the I want a battery NOW chirp and I can’t get at it and even if I could I’m not sure I remember how to get it off to do anything with. I’m also not sure if I have a good 9-volt and I’m too tired to go out to get one.

Why can’t things like this happen in the MORNING when I can make arrangements to get it taken care of? But, oh, NOOOOOOOO, it always, always, ALWAYS HAPPENS AT NIGHT. I’ve had the one in my bedroom pull this shit at one in the morning, and THAT one is on a 20-foot ceiling!

I’ve noticed a pattern of people assuming that because I explained a certain policy, the listener assumes I am the proponent of that policy.

LOL. This is just lame. If someone has filed a lawsuit against you, the process server will deliver the documents in person. Otherwise, they can eat shit.

But somewhere out there is an old person or someone who doesn’t know better, and they think, “Oh no! I’d better answer all of this person’s qustions!”

There are documented cases in which scammers and con artists have convinced people to do some crazy illegal shit because they claimed to be a cop or some other authority figure, and the person on the other end of the phone didn’t want to say, “No.”

My Dad got sued for that once.

He worked in a hospital (purchasing manager) and had previous experience in HR. A nurse’s temporary contract for her very first job after graduation was ending, so the hospital’s HR person tried to hand the nurse her end-of-contract papers: copies of the same documents the hospital was going to file with the unemployment office, social sec, etc. The nurse refused to take them, ran out, came back in with a lawyer, and the HR person called Dad to act as a witness that the nurse was refusing to take her copies. The nurse kept freaking out. Dad explained that since she wasn’t taking the copies, the hospital needed to file both the original, and a copy witnessed “tried to deliver, rejected”.

A few weeks later he got called in to the local court. He thought he was there as a witness, turns out he was being sued for “threats”. The threats had been “if you take the papers and sign the receipt, Ms. HR will just file everything normally; if you refuse to do it, I sign as witness and Ms. HR files as rejected.”

I understand that nurse hasn’t had a glorious career. The lawyer isn’t exactly considered the best in town, either, more like “if he hadn’t joined a union he’d never get any work”.

Fuck North Carolina’s insistence on hosing everything down with brine because of the slight chance that someone might see a snowflake over the weekend. At this point, I’m convinced that someone at the DOT has a significant financial stake in a local car wash chain.

Also, to the bumpkin tailgating the brine truck this morning: you must really hate your car.

Don’t worry, in the long term that’s a self-correcting problem. At least in the sense that we in Minnesota are already reaching a point where we need to look for alternatives because the amount of salt that has been put on our roads is pushing the salinity of lakes and ponds closer and closer to “no longer supports freshwater life forms”.

Dammit, our refrigerator is dead this morning.

Old guys in the pool, could you please remember it is public, mixed space and talk less about what makes your dick twitch and make fewer jokes about how rapey your friends are to women who dare to go by? You make it a very uncomfortable environment indeed.

Well, It’s happened. I’m down to the firewood that’s not as dry. It’s a PITA to light. It weighs a ton. It’s not my only heat source, but still I like a fire. Now that I’ve said it, it seems quite petty.

:smack:

NYE was my birthday! We could have had a mini-Dopefest! KC isn’t that far!:stuck_out_tongue:

Then maybe they should have sold naming rights. The Taco Bell Channel Tunnel!

At least they do it in advance now. In 2003 I got caught in an ice storm outside of Raleigh on I-40 when I was trying to get back to Salisbury from Greenville. They didn’t prepare for the storm so the roads were too horrendous for words. I ended up giving up on going home to Salisbury and opted to go to my sister’s house in Winston-Salem instead. It took 8 hours to go between Raleigh and Winston at 25 mph. Usually that trip takes maybe 2, 2.5 hours. NCDOT had all 12 snowplows out and they still couldn’t keep up.

I’ve heard about that! Although, here in North Carolina, most people are far more concerned about what Duke Energy, Chemours, and the hog industry have been channeling into our fresh water.

There’s this mobile freemium game I play that goes down for maintenance weekly. They changed the time to an unusual one this week, and I completely forgot, so I wasn’t able to exploit one of the limited time events to the extent I would have liked, and usually do. I’m unreasonably annoyed by this.

I have a bad knee and I’m waiting for “gel” shots to help me out. Usually I wear a big brace, with metal and straps. I don’t wear it when I sit for a long time, tho. Got off a plane and headed for the can-handicapped stall. It’s easier to get up from the higher toilet. Quick took care of my business and come out to be berated by a woman with a walker. Geez. Watch me limp over there and beat you to death.

The British Fudge Channel Tunnel.

I remember that storm! I was living in an apartment behind Rex Hospital at the time, and was assured that I wouldn’t need to worry about losing power because we were on the same grid as the hospital. Yeah, maybe that was the case when the apartments were built…

My issue with the brine is that the state fails to take into account what the weather is likely to do before the freezing event – in this case, we’re experiencing enough rain in this area that the brine will likely be washed away.

I live in Henderson county now. It’s rained so much here that even a few drops are enough to make the creeks flood again. I haven’t been able to go for a long walk on the greenway in months because parts are almost constantly covered in water and/or slick mud. As for going for a hike in the mountains, those trails are also constantly slick. No wonder I’ve gained ten pounds.
