OP here - can’t believe it’s been 5 years sine I posted this.
Still a bugger to spread oh fresh bread. Never used to be.
Hot bread, real butter and vegemite. One of life’s truly sublime joys.

I don’t know where to buy this in the USA
Someone on the SDMB loves it so much he gets tons of it a year. Is it Skald the Rhymer? Or Qadgop the Mercotan? I think he has a “the” in his name. Maybe.
Blast! I thought Cunctator was posting again. Fie on zombies.
QtM. Marmite and cheddar is his tipple I think. A man of discernment.
Our local Giant Eagle has Marmite in the international aisle.
There were three jars a few years ago. I bought one, then recently bought another. In a year or so I’ll buy the last jar. Don’t know what happens then.
Then you could buy some Vegemite to find out what you’ve been missing!!
In the Bay Area? Aussie Products.
I’ve read some taste-tests and where people prefer one over the other, Vegemite seems to win.
Yes but isn’t Marmite quite different?
Apparently. I was under the impression they were the same thing with different names.
My current 2.5 kilo bucket of vegemite is down to it’s last half kilo. Gotta re-order soon.
My big 500 gram jars of marmite are now down to the final jar, also.
I’ve got 1.5 tubes of Cenovis remaining to me.
Should get me through the summer.
We’ll crack the 20 year old cheddar this coming weekend, when the family is re-united, kids and spouses. The yeast spreads will come out too. Woo hoo!
Or maybe we’ll do the 17 year old cheddar. Save the 20 year old for news of the first grandkid, should that ever happen.
[sub]I really like cenovis best, for a pure treat on English muffin with melted butter. Marmite is my go-to for sandwiches with aged cheddar and eggs and onion. Vegemite is mainly for sauces and soups and chowders[/sub]
“Quite” is a bit of a strech, but they are somewhat different versions of a similar foodstuff. It’s a bit like arguing Heinz vs Hunt’s ketchup. The difference may be slightly more than that, but when I’m in the mood for autolyzed yeast spread, I don’t care if it’s Marmite or Vegemite (though I slightly prefer the latter). And then there’s New Zealand Marmite, which is also slightly different than regular marmite.
Anyhow, CostPlus World Market is where I find Vegemite here in the States. It’s the only place I’ve seen it. Marmite I see in a bunch of stores.
It’s gotta be Heinz, cuz Hunt’s is for less refined palates.
Hunt’s all the way, man!
Marmite is devil paste. Vegemite is the one true mite.
Variety is the spice of life. Subtle variations in flavor and texture can transmogrify foods and amplify nuances.
I’ve seen it, and Marmite, at health food stores, but never actually purchased it.
Your local grocery store may carry it; it doesn’t hurt to ask. Worst thing they can say is no, I guess.
Or Coke vs Pepsi.
I may get my citizenship revoked for this, but if the problem is that your 'mite is too sticky … well, Marmite does win in the spreadability stakes
Huh. I’m exactly the opposite: I find Vegemite more easily spreadable. Marmite is much more mollasses-y in consistency and seems to thicken up significantly over time, so much so that it gets almost impossible to open a jar of the stuff.
