Aussie Dopers - Vegemite harder to spread??

I haven’t noticed any difference in the spread ability of Vegemite at all.

QtM, very wise man to use it as flavour in soups etc, but you have to give it a crack with the aged cheddar.

Marmite is some form of English axle grease

I have been spending a lot of time looking after my father lately. When I went to make a toasted cheese and vegemite sandwich I discovered that he only had a travel pack tube. I don’t know if it’s my imagination but it seems far easier to spread and much easier to apportion - it’s like putting toothpaste on a toothbrush. I’ll be buying one to replace my jar when it runs out.

I had noticed that Vegemite was harder to spread and tearing the bread. Try 8-10 seconds in a microwave (lid off) and it is easier. Also spread the vegemite first then the butter over it. This stops the vegemite clumping like when spread over the butter.

A decade ago …

They provide a best-before date, but its fairly meaningless. In quiet news times, between bushfires and venomous animals, Australian papers have been known to fill column inches by finding who’s got the most expired jar still in the cupboard. I had a jumbo jar which took forever to finish - it was about 4 years out of date and tasted every bit as good as new. In the papers people had jars in progress from last century, so 15 years+ and were still working away at them with no apparent side effects.

In God’s name what sort of troglodyte takes fifteen years to get through a jar of vegemite?

Philistines!

I go thru 2.5 kilos of vegemite about every 5 years. Current bucket is getting low, I can see the bottom in a few spots.

Gots me some NZ marmite now too, along with my english marmite.

Now if I can only get my hands on some more swiss cenovis, my yeast spread rotations will be complete!

I find the NZ marmite the easiest to spread of them all.

When you do, can you do a taste and spreadability comparison? I’m sure all Straight Dope readers will be as fascinated as I am in your Rate the Yeast Spreads rankings.
